Believe it or not, the record company said "sorry babe, not funky enough" when JB brought it in. So he released it on his own, and it shot up to #1.

Well, not exactly - the track was deemed not funky enough for "Hell Up In Harlem", the film whose soundtrack was originally supposed to be supplied by James Brown. Because the producers lost their faith in Brown he lost the job to Edwin Starr. "The Payback" was then released on Polydor records. As simple as the bass line is, I never get sick of playing this one live!

Imagine telling James Brown his stuff ain't funky enough! That's like telling the Rolling Stones "Sorry, guys; you just don't rock hard enough."

As with most JB bass lines, groove all night and stay outasight !
