Janek Gwizdala's Mystery to Me

I just picked this up from emusic:

http://www.emusic.com/album/10884/10884362.html

This is a fantastic disc with incredibly deep grooves and playing. Along with Tony Grey's "Moving" CD, this one is fast becoming one of my favorites.

We are lucky to have Janek's message board on talkbass!

Yeah, all respect to Janek, I've only heard the MP3s on his site, but I'll be buying the album as soon as possible. Very interesting advice and views on his forum as well. Is he on any DVDs? One of my friends has links with Fodera and I'm currently compiling a shopping list for him of CDs and DVDs for when he next hits NY. What else is there with Janek on that you would recommend?

That's the only CD of his that I have. Maybe Janek can pipe in and list some cds or DVDs that he's on as a sideman or producer?

I've had the CD for quite some time now, and I think it's very cool.
I have to admit that I didn't like the WAL sound that much, especially in solos.

I'm looking forward to hear Janek with the Fodera.

I never heard it once where I wished he were playing a different bass. I just hear the great music!

Well, I didn't say that "I wished he were playing a different bass", either.

You said you didn't like the Wal sound. I never heard it and thought anything like that. I guess the tone sounded fine but I was listening more to the content. I think it's easy for all of us to get so distracted by the gear that we fail to realize that the gear is just the hammer and screwdriver...

he was just pointing out an opinion, don't take it personally! i'd say he hears the content just as much as you, its a good point, the sound, tone call it what you want is intrinsic to the content. How many times have you heard versions of tracks with a different instrumentalist playing the same part on guitar, bass whatever, and some you will like more than others? the content is the same but the colour is different and you like it less or more. This is to do with their feel and their choice of tone or sound

Who cares about the bass? Can we get back to the music? The CD is brilliant. I don't care what brand of screwdriver he's using.

To me this CD is a perfect combination of groove and intellect which is what has always attracted me to jazz in the first place.

And Tim Miller and the rest of the musicians are brilliant as well. It's just a really great CD!

well, maybe you should check what your replys to my post seem to imply (Demo obviously feels that way, too).

i think you are quite aware of what i mean. you "derailed" your thread more than anyone else.
