This isn't a review as such - I'm crap at giving analytical reviews of music I like, so all this is just an opinion; I strongly advise that you have a listen to the preview tracks on his site.
I recently bought this album off iTunes after previewing a couple of tracks.
It's not a Bass-wank album but groovy/swinging playing by the whole ensemble that's "out" enough to be interesting (to me) but not just bizarre-for-the-sake-of-it (in other words there is a discernible logic in it).
And the extended low range Bass is surprisingly audible, even on my mp3 player headphones (Sennheiser CX300, if anyone's interested).

Call me hopelessly unevolved, stick-in-the-mud and a slave to habit though, but my brain keeps telling me the bass is tuned too low and wants it to jump up an octave! I'd love to know if it is just because of what I'm used to or if it is because of the way we are hard-wired to respond to certain frequencies over others. Bass that low just seems to slip under my radar, and I end up tuning out and listening mostly to the guitar and drums. Or maybe the music just needs an instrument of some sort tuned between the low bass and the guitar, as a bridge between them. It's almost as if there is a hole there, and a bit of disconnect between the instruments because of it. Maybe live or blasting through a good appropriate system (I listened on headphones) this wouldn't be an issue!
In any case, my deep respect for Jauquo's mission and his music. |

In fact, I'm jealous of his ability to tune almost an entire octave lower than me. (jealous of his playing, too, obviously) |

Sounds like some of the Jazz that Clint Eastwood used in the Dirty Harry series of films. If Clint were to do a modern version, I'd bet he'd be all over that one.

Sometimes the opposing guitars get a little too far out for my taste, but it still rocks.
The low C# tuning is the bit that sends this record over the "what you'd expect" level, IMO.

One of the main points I was making with the two guitarists playing the way they were, was to show how the low frequency can still be in control and want to support the entire musical situation and not get in the way of the drums or the guitars.
Pretty much just sticking to the traditional role of the bass guitar. Quote:

Thank you for checking it out.
Bass player and the no longer around Guitar worlds Bass guitar mags hated the CD.
I had never ever read a bad CD review from those mags until I read my own.
It's interesting what the two mags thoughts.when so many bass players had this to say. Review:"The Low C# Theory" |

I have a trio recording that I'll be releasing that features the sub contra bass on the entire recording again.
The name of the CD is Trioplicity and It features Bernard Purdie on drums and guitarist Kudzai Kasambira(one of the guitarist from The LC#T).
I also have a sound library of the sub contra bass and a live drummer that I will be releasing as well.
I've attached a little snippet. |

I've attached a little snippet. | Dude, awesome stuff. You ever head to Colorado somewhere, and I'll be the first in the door.
Oh, and have you ever found any overdrives or fuzz stompboxes that play well with the sub contra tuning?

BTW, Kudzai is fast becoming my favorite new(ish) guitarist. He's so out there but unlike most out there dudes, he's got taste for days. |

| I can see why. I still have trouble wrapping my brain around some of your music, which to me, is not something that immediately grabs your ear, which to most people means repetitive groove, or hook oriented more structured music, that most are accustomed to.
In some ways it sound like everyone is playing something completely different at the same time so my brain tries to makes sense of it.
However sometimes this can be the most rewarding music to listen to. Music that challenges the listener.
Maybe I am completely offbase in my views but that is my uneducated unexplained, listeners view.
I like music that challenges the listener. |

Thanks again Jimmy. I used the same Adler fretless sub contra bass with the same rig that I used on the LC#T recording. One of the reasons the bass sounds the way it does on the trio recording is that the drums are not as busy and that there is only one guitarist and the guitar playing is not as out as the dual guitar work from the first CD,so it allows the low end frequency to blend differently and be a little more up front but the bass still has that growl that is really out of this world.
