I believe Larry Graham's performance on Sly And The Family stone's recording "Thankyou Fallettin' Me Be Mice Elf Again" may be the first slapped electric bass recording. It sure sounds like flatwounds and the back pickup only, to me. It is worth listening to for its' significance, and Larry's great playing on it. The Jazz Bass on A Taste Of Honey's "Boogie Oogie Oogie" is almost certainly strung with flats, listen to the short solo section, the bass is slapped for a few notes on the 'g' string. My Fender j bass with Fender flats absolutely nails that exact tone when I play it in that style. If you use a bright 'ringy' flat set like the Thomastik flats, it'll sound great if you can get into the ultra light (for my tastes) tension. Good luck!

I love this site. I don't own a Lakland, but this is a great sound comparison site.

It's not a tone I particularly like, but I think that Bootsy was using flats on Herbie Hancock's "Future Shock" album. There's some slap here and there along with (as usual) some cool envelope effects.

Beware - it's an '80s vintage recording and sounds like one, but if you free your mind it's got some really interesting stuff. There is a cool re-thinking of "Maiden Voyage" for instance.

Meshell

Meshell Ndgeocello's first disc "Plantation Lulluabies" had some nasty slapped grooves on a flat wound equipped jazz bass.

It's my understanding that Steely Dan's Peg was played with flats. Check out the chorus.

The slap/flat clip had a really groovy cool sound there, vintage and funky, I'd say imho flats and slap like that sounds a whole lot'a cooler than rounds (at least from what one can hear on the samples).
