| | | | Jazz, & Free Jazz - Advice On Where To Go...

In the last year or so, I've been getting far deeper into Jazz.
What a minefield - it's quite hard knowing where to go off the beaten track.
I'm loving John Coltrane, Mingus, Eric Dolphy (Out To Lunch - OMG), as well as some Miles, etc.
I've recently picked up 'Music Is The Healing Force Of Nature' by Albert Ayler. I think this LP represents everything that I want Jazz to be, just so free and free of any boundaries. Everything has sounded so bland since...except Sun Ra?
What I'd love to know, is where to go next. Please Jazz fans, what is best to go for? Artists/albums, etc.
I blame Santana/Mclaughlin 'Love Devotion Surrender'....it kind of got me to this point!
TBH, I'm not into the classic, kind of 'Autumn Leaves'-type Jazz, I really like things a bit more, well...experimental and Jazzy! |

in a more modern context, check out old Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey
both of these aren't completely free jazz, but the sounds do tend to veer off the road |

Artists/albums, etc. | Try the the early ECM sides by Dave Holland (Conference of the Birds), Anthony Braxton, Sam Rivers, et al. Chick Corea did some great outside stuff too (ARC, Circle Concert, Now He Sings, Now He Sobs). I'm also partial to the World Sax Quartet, Lester Bowie, Art Ensemble of Chcago, and Steve Coleman. Then there's always Cecil Taylor... |

If you haven't already checked out the Miles stuff - FILLES DE KILIMANJARO, IN A SILENT WAY, BITCHES BREW, ON THE CORNER, LIVE/EVIL etc. you might get a kick out of that.
I always liked Herbie's SEXTANT album.... Mwandishi, get past the hokey "welcome to our town" music...

Extraction by Greg Howe, Vic Wooten
Improvisation 2007 by Marachek, Sipe & Garrison
Brain + Another Mind by Hiromi
Almost any material from Kurt Rosenwinkle
Triangulo by Michel Camillo will twist your head a bit
The New Standard by Herbie Hancock
Thick + Dr Hee from Scott Henderson & Tribal Tech
Extention by Dave Holland
I often hear interesting stuff in the IndieFeed; Electronica podcast + I live near a library with a great music collection. I used to take my CD player there, sit down & listen, listen, listen until I found music I like.

If you're up for some laughing in amazement check out Bobby McFerrin!!!
Also, as a side note, I'm playing the same festival as the Sun Ra Arkestra this summer
