Nice. Very technical indeed but you can't dance to it!! Maybe it's because I'm 43, but I don't see the need for non-groovin' 240bpm shredding! Give me funk jazz and latin any day of the week!

thrash_jazz beat me to it.

it all started with naked city's TORTURE GARDEN.

without that LP, mr. bungle would be nothing!

bill frisell, fred frith, john zorn, yamatsuka eye, Wayne Horvitz, and joey baron.

still untouchable!

Check out Meshugga! Although it's more "math-metal" Fredrik Thordendals solos sound very Alan Holdswort influenced. Go to the link specified below!

Yes, Fredrik Thordendals Special defects in a really good record. It even features one of my favourite drummers, Morgan Ågren, from Mats/Morgan Band.
Some clips can be found on http://www.meshuggah.net/
(If you want to listen to Mats/Morgan the clips that can be found here aren't very good, check out the records Live and The Music Or The Money instead. You who live in sweden: Go by "Live" NOW!)

While it might not be as jazzy as you're looking for, check into Ulver's album "Bergtatt". It is black metal, but it's probably some of the most inventive black metal i've listened to. Don't try and get anything later, though, because while Nattens Madrigal is good, it's totally indecipherable as the recording quality isn't and they sort of stopped being a metal band somewhere along the lines as they do eurotrance and techno now.
