jazz standards compilations?

Sign in to disble this ad
Can anyone recommend a decent compilation of jazz standards, preferably played by the 'greats' (Miles etc)? I'm not looking for the original show tunes and songs, or brand new and complicated interpretations but the 'accepted' standards, if there is such a thing (Miles Davis' version of Stella is a good example).

Not that I'm aware of and I don't really recommend getting such a thing if it were available. I would much more recommend getting something akin to a series of tapes that Neal Miner's dad made for him - a variety of different musicians playing the same songs. Becuase it's not that there's a definitive VERSIon of a standard as it is, given this harmonic framework, how do different people approach it.

Just my opinion, but I been doing this for a minnit...

I'm not sure if you're asking for sheet music or recordings here. It sounds to me like you're asking for recordings. I don't know of any compilation(s) that are going to fit your bill. I would recommend getting a recommened listening list (Aebersold has one in his free jazz booklet) and start collecting sounds. As suggested above, when you get a tune and recording that you like, seek out other recordings of the tune.

thanks guys - i already have a real book and a giant collection of standards for band-in-a-box, i just wanted to know if there was a 'definitive' collection of any kind, and by that I mean recordings, not sheet music - a starting point, if you will. But I guess, as always, there are no real shortcuts when it comes to learning this stuff, so it looks like lots of listening and research are the way to go.

As i'm a newbie in jazz culture, i found this topic on this forum very useful: 6 playlists which can be a part of what you need.

I'm into doing this for sure. I've spent a whole day just listening to various versions of "My Romance". Its pretty cool to see how different folks have tackled the same tune. BTW, Ben Webster owns My Romance for me, or maybe Tony Bennett, or Ella? Ah, so much good jazz to be had.
