So which are the decent ones out there? Some of my favorites are:

the sound of silence - Barney Kessel
tears in heaven - Jeff Berlin
get up, stand up - Lee Retinour & Dave Grusin
paint it black - Stone Jazz
it's my life - Paul Anka

Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Ray Brown and Louis Hayes did a blazing, up-tempo version of the Stones' "Satisfaction."

I can't come up with the guys name, but there's a CD out of jazz versions of lots of Rolling Stones tunes by one of the sax players that tours with them. Charlie and Keith are on some cuts..... totally smoking. Sorry I can't come up with the name of the disc, but I assume someone will know.

Street Fightin' Man as a fast hard bop!!!!!! What's not to like

Edit: I found it.... Tim Ries....The Rolling Stones Project. It's quite amazing.

I gotta say +1 on that!!

Also:
Detroit Rock City - Alex Skolnick Trio (Funny since Alex used to be the guitarist with Testament, and now he is a jazzer!)
Carry on Wayward Son - Brian Bromberg on solo DB!
Shining Star - Brian Bromberg from the same album (Wood II)
It's Your Thing - BWB (Rick Braun, Kirk Whalum, Norman Brown, oh yeah, and Christian McBride)
Up For The Down Stroke - BWB (same album - buy it, it rules!)
Pick Up The Pieces - Candy Dulfer
Walking On The Moon (Police) - by Christian McBride - man, oh man!
Ain't It Funky Now - George Duke (McBride on bass again)
Blackbird - Jaco
Wind Cries Mary - Jamie Cullum
John Scofield's tribute to Ray Charles called "That's What I'd Say"
Papa Was A Rollin' Stone - Lee Ritenour (from the Overtime CD w/Melvin Davis on bass)
Kashmir - Lenny White (absolutely killer!)
Frankenstein - Marcus Miller (Then listen to the version by Overkill. That's just a good time.)
Julia (Lennon/Beatles) - Medeski, Scofield, Martin, & Wood (maybe the most beautiful song ever!)
Pick Up The Pieces & My Girl - Melvin Sparks
Do It Again, Lovely Day, & Fire & Rain - Phillip Saisse Trio
Rick Braun does Shining Star, Walk On The Wild Side, Daughters, and Groove Is In The Heart on his "Yours Truly" CD.
Crosstown Traffic - Soulive w/Robert Randolph (smokin')
Lenny - Soulive
Jesus Children of America - Soulive

Just off the top of my head.

I recall someone mashing together "Come as You Are" and the intro of "Smells like Teen Spirit" and moving it to 5/4 time, with a jazzy feel. I actually kind of liked it. Does anyone remember the artist/song title?

I was lucky enough to see the supporting tour for that one.

There are a few Miles Davis pop music covers that no one's mentioned yet: Time After Time and Human Nature. Some like, some hate, what ya gonna do?

I think that's "Bad Plus"
They also do the best IronMan cover I've ever herd. If you haven't listened to these guys I suggest a check out I'm going to see them live next week.
They cover one song per album and they have about 5 albums out.

I know, and certainly agree, but seeing him play it shortly before he died pretty much was one of the high points of my concert going experiences. I own plenty of Miles sides, have heard nearly all of the others, and saw him play half a dozen times or so. I never have heard him play trumpet better than what I heard that night...go figure!

... and speaking of great jazz versions of rock and pop songs, I saw Brad Mehldau a couple weeks ago, and he closed his set with an unbelievably good version of Black Hole Sun.

Yep, it was on an album called
Bing, Bing, Bing
and it's actually 6/8 time signature.

I love Charlie Hunter!
