Jazz or Zappa (Best Zappa songs for bass)

Sign in to disble this ad
Well I know that every musician needs at least two songs in their repertoire, so I learned Prelude in G by Bach, now for the other song. I have Prelude almost all the way down and ready to perform. But I was thinking for the nest song to be Autumn Leaves, or maybe Freddie Freeloader. Haha I heard Autumn Leaves and I really want to do it. But then I thought of maybe covering Zappa! I have some really good chops so I can cover some nice stuff. But he's had some sick bassists so who knows if I could play it or not. I'll have been playing two years in three months. The problem is I'm not very well acquainted with Zappa's work, but what I've heard I liked. What are some good Zappa songs for bass? What is the most impressive? or Should I just do Autumn Leaves?

That's a good song, also in the Real Book.

Somebody who posts on this board has a website with a ton of later (Scott Thunes era) Zappa bass transcriptions. Lots of good stuff.

Err.. where did you get that from?

I think that's setting the bar very low - I mean two songs is not much of a set and I think most "musicians" would know dozens of songs at least and especially Jazz musicians would aspire to knowing hundreds or thousands that they could play at the drop of a hat.

OK you have to start somewhere, but I don't think this should be anywhere near the summit of your ambitions!

You run that site!? I love that place!!!

I would think any Zappa song would really be impressive to learn. It's easy, but I Am The Slime sounds fancy to the ear.

I suppose I run it in the loosest sense... I haven't transcribed anything for it for months though...

probably the hardest one to physically play out of those transcriptions would be What's New In Baltimore http://thescottthuneseffect.com/dhbim_baltimore.php

but with Zappa you can only play a lot of if correctly if you really know what's going on in the music i.e. what a 7:6 feels like.. not hard from a finger dexterity sense, but hard from a 'conceptualising the thing correctly' point of view
