Jazzgrind?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just found this cool band called Cause For Effect. They play this weird "grind / jazz-ish / whatever else you think you hear" kind of music. And it's only a bassist and a drummer, so I thought I'd share. Not for everyone, cool nonetheless.

I don't know what that is, but it aint jazz, jazz-ish, jazz-like, kind-of-jazz, reminiscent of jazz, jazz influenced, jazz-o-licious or anything else that even contains the word jazz.

Kind of cool though.

If it weren't for the vocals I'd be totally into this. I just can't get beyond the grunting growl thing.

Can you define jazz, though? IMO jazz is probably the genre that most readily adapts to contemporary forms of expression - what is and isn't jazz is often debatable. If it involves elements of free jazz and fusion I wouldn't say it's *definitely* not jazz...

Ain't sayin' you're right... ain't saying you're wrong...

Also pretty cool stuff. As a fan of death metal and grindcore I really enjoy these vocals.

I kind of see them as a fusion band. Listen to some more, you may see some jazz influence. IMO. It may have been better if I titled the thread "Fusiongrind".

This band however, has been labelled as jazzgrind (or something similar) by almost everyone.

Naked City - Osaka Bondage - YouTube

And they are awesome. (Thank you JimK!)

this is just a hunch... have no data whatsoever to back it up, but i reckon if you asked these CFE guys to describe the genre of music they identify with, the word JAZZ would NOT be in it.

...just sayin....

Check out "Asylum"-
(wish this was my ringtone!)
Naked City live in Germany (1990) Part 1 - YouTube

It starts approx. 2:50 in (your "Osaka Bondage" is the 1st 'tune').
If you're not that familar with NC & Zorn, Frissel, Baron, Horvitz, Frith...they are on other projects where the playing is very "in".
You may also like Zorn with Masada & Electric Masada.

Much Modern Jazz does not "swing"...in fact, much of it is a statement that is anti-Swing.
Read up on the '60s Free Jazz/New Thing musicians...
For a long while, I was in your camp.
If "it" didn't dovetail into MY definition of Jazz...then it was not Jazz.

I do agree that the word "Jazz/jazz" is diluted.
Few years ago, I asked our UK-ers..."Acid Jazz"? I hear the "acid" part, where's the Jazz?

BTW, your 1st sentence above-
"Man, That ain't nothin like Jazz"-

...that has been uttered each time Jazz has taken off into a new sub-genre.
The Beboppers were all lambasted because they were destoying Jazz (at that time, Jazz = Swing Bands, etc). Bebop was a statement against the current/stale state of (Swing Band) Jazz.
Miles' Bitches Brew...lambasted because it was anti-Jazz.
Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, Phroah Sanders, Anthony Braxton, et al.

Funny...now Bebop would be considered a mainstream Jazz genre.
