I don't know how he picked that guy, but I'm glad it wasn't me.

I wouldn't even touch a bass in front of Jeff.

:)

Wow. Good thing dude had some skills so he wasn't too fazed at all, IMO. I didn't think it was a bad lesson at all. He's surely a rough teacher to have though.

tekdiver500ft 02-03-2013 09:18 AM

Wow. That's a great concept, and a brutal way to teach it. Thanks so much for sharing.

SBassman 02-03-2013 09:18 AM

It was a very good lesson.

And Jeff was great through it all.

I'm just glad it wasn't me. I would have folded. That guy held up well. :)

Blyss (the guy getting the lesson) is a seriously good bay area player and a great dude.

I don't like Jeff's recorded playing, a personal preference, but his lesson delivery kicks major butt. He's a killer teacher. I wanted to go to his school when I lived in Florida but never could, even though I lived literally 3 miles from it.

And after all the years of reading him in Bass Player magazine, I have yet to ever see him be wrong.

He's spot on. WTG, Jeff!

Perhaps they'll make it a series?

The problem is he's absolutely right! It's very easy to get into a "comfort zone" and not change & grow(God knows I'm guilty as hell!). Just goes to prove, we all need to know music & theory and how to apply it in everyday playing...... (excuse me, I have some major woodshedding to do!!!).

I got better just watching that lesson

That video reminds me of Steve Vai's audition for Frank Zappa, Steve went through it pretty hard.

Cool! Thanks for posting! I'm waiting for free time and finances to collide and then I'm taking some Skype lessons with Jeff. This is a good warmup!

Yes, it really does. I'd never seen that interview before, thanks for posting it.

I miss Jeff here :bawl:

bassinplace 02-04-2013 10:48 AM

Interesting, but. He's recommending that one should study things they aren't familiar with. Kinda goes without saying, me thinks.

But so many folks don't get that :scowl:

Wow!

Great vid. I was trying to imagine myself sitting there in front of Jeff Berlin while holding a bass, and all I could think of was FREEZE UP. Excellent lesson - I'm going to try to apply it immediately.

Jeff's approach reminds me of Zappa's approach to auditions (at least in the case of Steve Vai - if you haven't seen it, you should youtube it - it's hysterical.)

Oh wait - it's posted above - the clip has reminded someone else of the audition, too!
