Jeff Buckley "Hallelujah" - Two Different Versions?

Sign in to disble this ad
Help me out here: This version of the song, that a friend of mine just posted on Facebook, sounds completely different from the Version I remember from the album Grace (which, sadly, I don't have with me right now):

I've googled and couldn't find any info at all on Jeff Buckley having recorded two version of the song. Am I crazy?

My favorite version of it is the one he did in an Irish bar in Harvard Square one night in front of about 12 people before he had a record deal. A friend of mine played and we were at the bar having a drink when this unassuming guy sat down with a Rickenbacker and unleashed that voice on an unsuspecting small crowd. Stopped all conversation in the bar, we all stood there with our mouths hanging open.

There are a bunch of unique versions of that song in general, and by JB in particular.

There's a version on the Live at Sin-e EP (said EP looks to have been reissued as a 2-CD set with DVD, now that I check Amazon).

That's a great experience you can take to the grave. I can only imagine.

Maybe they cut a live in-studio version for the promo? This has always baffled me.

I believe there are alternate versions in one of the box sets. I also recommend listening to Leonard Cohen's original, too.

I actually prefer Buckley's version, even though I am a big Cohen fan.

I also think Buckley's is superior.

I like Buckley's version, but having had access to an Alesis Quadraverb a wee bit of the magic is now lost on me. It is however a raw and powerful from-the-soul take of a classic song.

I realize it loses some hip cred, but rufus wainwright's version is pretty cool too.
