Danny Wilsons' MONSTEROUS STINGRAY TONE! Seen them in a small club in Chicago about 79' or so, with the then Kenny Gorelick..Kenny "G".

Bobbo 77' | Water Sign - the album that made me take bass seriously. I was 17...Danny Wilson was 17!!!!!! If he could do it, so could I. He used as StingRay, Charlie Meeks (from Chuck Mangione at the time) used a StingRay. I picked up a used StingRay then - and then a fretless one too. Best basses I've ever owned - best tone in the world. Then EB bought them and turned them into crap. Not looking to start an Ernie Ball argument here (so don't - if you've never done a side by side comparison with pre-EB and post-EB, there's just no comparison). I'm just glad to see someone else appreciates Danny Wilson. When I first got my myspace up, someone emailed me when they read my influence and said "Danny who?" Apparently an unschooled youngin who thinks that Fieldy is "awesome."
Jeff Lorber still rocks!! He's one of the reasons I'll keep my Sirius subscription for his Sunday night jazz show.

I've often wondered, aside for the obvious "touch" and "Feel", and of course recording technique and analog tape, how he got that "tone"? Maybe a hopped-up Stingray, sort of like Louis Johnson's?? My 77' with the alnico pickups of course sound fatter and warmer than the E.B.'s ceramic, but his tone sound's like it's got some serious "hair" on dem dar note's!

I have to say that there are instruments out there that are not high-end, that are commerically available, and are incredibly functional and playable. I have an Ibanez Roadstar Strat copy from the 80's that is my rock/country/blues etc. lead guitar. They've stopped making them, and you can find these for under $100 on ebay used...but it's the best all around solid body guitar I've ever had. The only drawback is that it's light in the sustain area, but a compressor takes care of that.
I also just purchased a Washburn J-6 for my jazz guitar stuff. Looked for two years to find a 25.5 inch scale that had a nice full tone and played like butter. This is it. Retail for $1200+ when they were made in Korea, but found mine used for $350. The ones made in China now have received mixed reviews. An incredible value and much better tone production than the Epiphone and Samick equivalents (IMHO - I remembered that time )
Mike Adler tells me the sixer he's making for me will be done soon, so I'll have a new standard to compare everything else against. Unless there's some type of "you just GOTTA give these basses another "play"" movement out there, dealing with the retail outlets EBMMs are sold through don't knock my socks off, and make me want to work with custom luthiers for all of my future projects. Even though the Brices are inexpensive, I have had nothing but impeccable customer service from Kurt at Rondo. THAT goes a long way toward customer satisfaction and positive recommendations.
The other factor is timing. Apparently I made these comparisons when I was in the market 5 years ago. Have there been improvements made since then? I'm sure there have been. Does EB make a 6 string MM right now with 19mm spacing available? I don't think so...therefore, I'm not interested in them anymore for what I'm playing now.
Apologies for the hijack - back to Lorberchat....

Indeed - I wonder if we can email that question to Lorber at Siruis? Thank you, too, for the pickup description. ANY kind of change in construction changes what's produced...even the strings matter.

But I have to say I preferr the gloss finishes on the necks and FB's of the pre EB Stingrays and my 92 has a killer birds eye neck and FB that I have never had any problems with. |

Definately my Sr5 for current music, Music Ministry, and my 77" for a Bass I can alway's count on no matter what the style! Also, I KNOW this Bass, and on high pressure gig's I don't have to worry about anything other than picking it up and playing it, and I know it will alway's sound FUNKY!

I used to do that back in those days and I even called it playing on your tippy toes because if you trim the nails just right you can either use them or switch to the flesh part instantly. Quote:

Bobbo 77" | I'd just love to find a drummer that would play like that...I've got the keyboard player (she's awesome) and know a guitar player that cooks in the style of Grant Giessman...even have a violin player that could add a bit of Ponty to the mix...
But drummers - (sigh). Where's a "Guy Patterson" when you need one?
