Jeff Schmidt - Outre

I can't believe that there isn't a thread here yet for Jeff Schmidt's new CD: Outre.

I'm not much for writing reviews so I'll keep this short. This is an amazing recording. It is a collection of diverse and original music which utilizes numerous alternate tunings. Jeff's basses are strung upside down from standard tuning. Obviously, this comes from him being a lefty who got started playing right-handed basses upside down. This isn't uncommon among lefties. The effect, much like using alternative tunings, is to enable him to play things in a way that wouldn't or couldn't normally be played on a normally strung instrument.

The sound of this recording is immaculate. I currently only have the MP3 versions which Jeff is selling at:
http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/1948570

They are encoded at 192kbps. I haven't noticed any mp3 artifacts or anything. It will be interesting to compare them with the CD version when I get copy.

You can get the CD at:
http://cdbaby.com/cd/jeffschmidt
CD Baby is a great place to buy CD's. They ship fast and are pretty fair price-wise. They also have tons of recordings that you can't find anywhere else.

There are audio samples at CD Baby. I highly recommend checking them out.

Having seen Jeff twice recently, I visited his website last month, but failed to stay on top of developments. A very inspiring composer and monster player. I'll have a Schmidt audio collection very soon. Thanks, Dave.

Jeff came to Victor Wooten's camp last month and performed and did a clinic along with Zuzo Moussawer, the runner up in the Bass Extremes solo competition. After the performance, Jeff gave away a free copy of Outre to all 60 students.

He is a great player and he seemed like a great guy as well. I would definitely recommend his CD to anyone, especially bass players interested in expanding their view of bass. The composition of the songs is great, and the performance is flawless.

Thanks, Dave. I just went to CD Baby and purchased two CD's. I was over there last week and they were out of stock.

it's probably bad form to post in a thread about yourself - but thanks for starting this Dave - and to those who bought the CD - you RULE!

Sir Schmidt (Jeff el Jefe), this is one *amazing* album. And a highly acclaimed album on CD Baby (glad you linked to this from your website): http://cdbaby.com/style/592

The discs arrived yesterday, and I have listened 4 times already (this morning). For me, it's like the music gets newer every time I listen. So glad I got two CDs, given you are only offering 1,000. You redefine boundaries, or explore the lack of them, with perfection and amazing listenability that I've sustained for hours now. It's too much for me to even have a favorite track yet. That's the point, but I think I might have two, so far.

Your album is well-named and even better executed. Amazing. Astounding. You are an amazing composer and visionary. And you've only been playing seriously (again) since 2004? You are legend.

Jeff's music knocked me out!! I will now either take up permanent residence in the woodshed or switch instruments to the kazoo.
