Thumbs up Jerry Jemmott's playing on Aretha Franklin live @ Filmore

Sign in to disble this ad
O....M....G...!!!!
This has got to be the single best example of that funky Jamerson style stuff I've ever heard, Jerry is burning it up on this cd!

I give this to my bass students when they ask to learn Jamerson,
it's a little less technical and better recorded than alot of motown..

Just get this,

it's the groovy 70's fingerstyle bible IMO,
all u need,
and Aretha's "Bridge over Troubled Water" will make u weep, from it's pure genius,
Ray Charles jams some vocals and electric piano on the encore,
Aretha & Jerry Jemmott play w such pure, pure talent..
Her vocals are as strong as ever,
prime era for her..

Anybody suggest a good classic BB king cd with Jemmott jamming hard like this?
Put it on and dance!
Woooo!

Funny, I was just........

...listening to that album last night, and thinking that I should post here to clue everyone in about his amazing work......

This album, plus King Curtis Live at the Fillmore ( same band ), should be required listening.....

Not only same band, but same night if I'm not mistaken.

King Curtis's version of Signed Sealed Delivered is absolutely killing.

Fantastic recording. I still chuckle at 1) The tempo of Respect that opens the disc and 2) the way Aretha comes in on that tune... like on the & of 4 or something. The band is like 'wha... OK... BAM!' Wonderful!

This and the Filmore record are two great examples of Jemmott's playing!

That one is totally burning! They hit like 25 clicks faster than the original.

Jerry's one of the greats. He was also on BB Kings Indianola Mississippi Seeds album.

God Bless, Ray

Aretha Live at the Filmore is one of my two favourite records. (The other one is Donny Hathaway Live w Willie Weeks.) My band opens every show with her version of Love The One You're With. And we often do her super up-tempo version of Respect too. I hear something different from Jerry Jemmont every time I listen to those tunes. Every time. He is so syncopated and funky and melodic. And then there's Bernard Purdie. Wow...

Jerry Jemmott!! I have a cassette that has the live Aretha album on one side, and the live Donny Hathaway album on the other. That was my pre-gig ritual. Pop in that tape on the way to the gig, and be in the perfect frame of mind to play when I got there.

Jerry's tone and touch are amazing all the way through. The King Curtis live recordings was indeed recorded at the same two gigs as the live Aretha ones. King Curtis & The All Stars opened for Aretha, then they were her band for her show. The record company was able to get two live albums from the same two nights of recording, and that's the only reason they did it- otherwise it would have cost too much to record those gigs.

The other indispensible Jerry Jemmott recording is "Completley Well" by B. B. King. There's an old Champion Jack Dupree album recorded live at the Montreux Jazz festival which has JJ and Cornell Dupree (no relation to Jack) and I've forgotten the drummer. Jack doesn't seem used to playing with a band, and just plays what sounds good. Some choruses have 13 1/2 measures, etc. But the band just hangs with him and is soooo tight anyway.

JJ was one of Jaco's acknowledged heroes. Jaco said he used to sneak into Criteria studios and listen to Jerry play. He said "those were the sounds I wanted to be making". I think that's a large part of why the DCI video is as together as it is- Jaco was trying to be on target for his hero and mentor.

He played with Roberta Flack too. I'm pretty sure he was on the album with Killing Me Softly.

Back in 1983 I was tending bar at the original 55 Grand in NYC.....during my tenure, the smaller version of Word of Mouth ( inc. Alex Foster, Melton Mustaffa, Don Alias, Mike Stern, Kenwood Dennard ) wa playing regularly there.....One night as I was setting up, Jaco came over ,and told me that an old friend was coming in and asked would I please take care of him, his name was "Jerry".....well, Jaco's friend showed up,he was quite genial, and even laughed when I suggested that he have a "real" drink instead of what he ordered ( Grand Marnier, if memory serves), ....later on, this guy "Jerry" jammed with the band and was smoking - he sounded just like Jerry Jemmott !

Very cool story!
Soon as I return from this mini-tour, I'm gonna snag "Completely Well" off iTunes
And yeah, I know about Willie Weeks w Donny live, my buddy used to dj at a club on NYC called Wetlands, whenever I'd visit, I'd have to hear his version of
"Mercy Mercy(the Ecology)" on their huge system, it rocked the dance floor every time.

It's a classic. If you continue to dig it, you might want to get the other two recordings to complete, IMO, the classic 'live' soul recordings:

Donny Hathaway Live.... 'You've Got a Friend' is worth the price of the whole disc... maybe one of the best live performances ever IMO. The crowd interaction with the band blows me away every time I hear it.

Bill Withers Live at Carnagie Hall... they 'sweetened' the live recording with some strings back in the studio, which is a shame, but the massive grooves still come through. The first cut (Use Me) is almost the definition of 'behind the beat groove'.

Amazing stuff!

Back when I was a sax player some of the bands I was in used to go after some of the King Curtis live stuff. I always thought Jerry Jemmott was a percolatin' monster. And these live dates showed that energy/drive even more than the Muscle Shoals studio stuff.
