Continuum is definitely different than John Mayer's older stuff, more "Soul" based, less "Blues" |

I'm a big Mayer and Dela Fan. By Soul, I think it sounds more soul based, having it be inspired by Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, esk sound. It's cool, but it's not exactly the John Mayer we heard and saw on Heavier Things and Room for Squares. I've listened to Continuum a few times and I didn't really like it at first, but it is growing on me. It feels like John's writing has been getting progressively "simpler". If you look at the progression from Room for Squares to Heavier Things to Contiuum, you notice more "space". There are about half as many chord changes in his writing of songs from each album to the subsequent one, which could be seen as good and bad. Simpler sometimes is better and some could attribute to John growing as a musician, however some would argue that he's getting "comfortable" in his fame and position as a musician that he isn't trying as hard in his writing.
As a bassist, Continuum is my least favorite album (at this stage of listening). It has some great grooves in it, but it doesn't have any of the flashy basslines like in "no such thing" nor does it have the raw feeling that you got from Pino's work on "Try!".
As an avid Mayer fan, it's yet to be seen if this album meets my hopes for the third album of such a promising musician.
I'll keep listening and let you guys know. |

I love the bass grooves on room for squares too. It's on my list of albums to jam along with, great stuff. |

but in this case it was previewed on clearchannel. John Mayer DJ'd something for Kiss FM and they web-casted the whole thing. You could listen to the whole thing online, but they just took it down. |

I have to say give it some time to grow on you. Being a long time mayer fan, it'll grow on you. But like I said before it is "simplified" a lot in many respects. I'm a big fan of about half the songs on the album. I think lyrically, this has some of his best and worst work. |

I dig The new CD.
But Pino suffers from a bad mix.
Bass to low on CD. |

| | | Nice tune. I GREATLY prefer his original bass player to Pino all the way around... Pino's tone his quite muffled and muddy to my ears on this recording and on that live trio recording. Pino's fretless tone and playing is amazing.... his PBass stuff.... not so much IMO.
I say him with Simon and Garfunkel a while back... some thing... good, bassic playing, muddy tone IMO.
I sure hope he doesn't use that same tone with the Who |

WOW. very very chill and quite. pino is pretty background (everything is). i dig some of the soul/funky type stuff he does, but for the most part the record is a downer/depressing disc. Simplicity is the key (makes sense, it's POP).
it was worth the 13 bucks, but i much prefer his first record with Dela ripping all over the place. |

Pino's tone is old school. |

Pino is not as buried in the mix as the live CD, but I wish he sounded a little more like Will Lee and a little less like Joe Osborn. Leburyee actual got lost in the mix some too, I thought both of them are a little too old school sounding. Modern amps and cabs come with tweeters! I actually like Pino's playing with Mayer little better then Daves. Not knocking Lebruyere but Pino's groves are righteous and there is nothing WRONG with Steve Jordan!

Before he always sang about girls and love and all that, now he's singing about much different stuff, in some songs, and I think that he might want to showcase the lyrics and guitar a little more maybe?. Huge fan of Dela and Pino by the way...
