John Mayer's "Continuum"

Anyone else pick this up yet? I got it today -- so far, it's great. A lot more laid back than the JMT's "Try!" where there aren't really any uptempo tunes to speak of. It's pretty reminiscent of Remy Shand's self-titled release, as well as D'Angelo's "Voodoo," which probably has something to do with the fact that Pino Palladino was also heavily involved with D'Angelo's album.

IMO, Mayer's been really showing his colours for the past while with this CD and the JMT release -- out of any "popular" artist, he's probably the one most deserving of admiration for his music.

Also dig the fact Roy Hargrove's playing horns on several tracks. This struck me as particularly cool because I bought the RH Factor's "Distractions" about ten minutes before I bought Continuum.

Yeah, Roy Hargrove is another guy who was pigeonholed early (albeit into a very different niche) and is now branching out in a big way.

i like some of the songs, i still think his first album "room for squares" is the best. david labruyere's (Dela) bass playing was great. Pino's playing on this record is sparse and mostly root 5 type stuff.

The stuff i do dig on it are

I Don't Trust Myself (With Loving You)
Heart Of Life
Stop This Train
Slow Dancing In A Burning Room

Just my .02

Man, Pino's got a pocket so deep you can lay down and sleep in it!

It's all really different stuff -- definitely an adjustment for every album. I like the stuff off of Room For Squares, but I really dig what he's doing now and I find his musicianship is really growing a lot. "Gravity" has been on three albums now I think, and the newest one is the best so far IMO.

I think there is a thread about this album from about a month ago about when the album came out. My thoughts are in there.
