John Myung slapping during Endless Sacrifice?

Sign in to disble this ad
This is going to seem like a silly question, but I'm honestly curious...

I'm listening to Endless Sacrifice by Dream Theater on their album Train of Thought. During the parts starting at 9:36 and 10:05 I'm hearing a clicking noise that sounds just like a slap bass riff, but there's no audible bass. I'm using Ultimate Ears Triple-Fi earbuds, and can clearly hear all of John Myungs parts...except during these 2 sections. They played this song when I saw them in October, but he was completely missing from the mix. For those of you that've seen him live and might've paid attention to this tiny detail, is he playing a slap bass riff or tapping? Is there a live recording anywhere that actually captures what he's playing? Thanks in advance.

Nope, he's not slapping there. The bass is following the guitar directly during that riff. The clicking noise is part of Jordan's keyboard sound.

Ive seen them/him play this song live 5 times now and 3 of them from directly in front of him.

There is a live recording of it on the live at Budokan cd/dvd. you can check it out there if you want to...

Myung does have a pretty heavy attack, and if you are listening through headphones it might be the bass you are hearing. He plays over the neck pickup and hits the strings hard like Steve Harris from Iron Maiden.
