Joss Stone's band

Bass player gets a nice tone.

I must say though, this performance right here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=NPTbdpA7N...elated&search=

Does nothing for me.
The band is not grooving and I would have to blame the drummer.
Bass player is right there in the pocket.
It feels to me like the drummer is rushing and Joss Stone's vocals are lagging behind. Leaves me completely cold... Maybe it's not even the drummer's time but he's got way too much going on up top? Or maybe they didn't really rehearse much for it.

Then at the end a complete cacophony of horns, backup vocals, squealing guitar and cymbals.

THEN AGAIN, I think it's the MIX. Vocals are WAY too loud and the drums are miked horribly.

Something about it doesn't sit right!

I don't know guy, if I had anything to do with any aspect of that production, I'd put one in the win column.

I'd have like it better if the snare was a little hotter and a little more consistent on the back beat as well but, I wouldn't call it a show killer by any stretch.

I think the tech crew that put that show together should get some kind of award for the work they did over the course of that 5 or 6 hours.

Maybe I'm just cranky from 3 hrs of sleep last night.

But also, it's not just the sound crew or sound quality.
Something about the playing of the band doesn't hit me right. Yes it probably DOES have a lot to do with the snare sound, and snare level.

Wow, I thought that was great. The mix, plus whatever sampling rate is used for YOuTube audio, didn't do it any favors (I couldn't hear any kick drum at all), but I thought the overall performance and arrangement were really good.

Also, with all due respect to the talented Ms. Stone: I'd hit it.

I really liked the performance too. I've really liked Joss Stone since I first heard her.

You cannot really put too much vocals in the mix IMO (same goes for bass ). The vocals are what people listen to, the rest of the band is just supporting them. I hate listening to live bands which vocals don't cut through. You see it way too often.

It doesnt sound to bad to me. THe drummer sounds more like a rock drummer. He's trying to be flashy rather than holding down a groove. Maybe its just the song because Ive heard her band groovin before.

Yup. That's what it is.
Not just holding down a groove.
IMO that's EVERYTHING in backing a singer like Stone. If you're wanking all over the music say goodbye to the gig.

Would you rather see Joss playing bass?

The bass player, Peter Iannacone, has been touring with Joss since the Soul Sessions tour.
I think he is also the musical director/band leader.

There were about 150 people in the audience when saw her perform.
She blush every time we applauded.

I thought that the performance was pretty good. The tempo of the tune seems maybe a little bit faster than the original version of the (1st)tune and that can mess with what we think the groove should be.

The mix was definitely bad. Barely any drums and a lot of bass! I actually wasn't that thrilled with the drummer but he was solid. I thought it grooved hard though as you could tell she was feeling it!

Here is Joss being backed by what appears to be Tom Jones' band. Nice. Digging the whole band sound

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLJ1NZqd4_8

By the way I went back and listened to some of the other cuts.. Sounds pretty good actually. Would prefer a *little* more funky drummer, but that's OK. In fact, last night I did a gig with a drummer that would eat this dude for lunch, BUT nothing wrong with him.

I agree. Way too much transition playing, IMO! He needs to learn to find a groove and lock into it! I honestly don't think he even cared what the bass player was playing. I can't play with drummers like that!

+1
Who knows, he might be one of the top drummers in the UK having a bad day -- unfortunately, a bad day in front of 20,000+ spectators and millions of TV viewers.

I remember a quote that one of the motown drummers gave. He said Jamerson used to tell him "I dont care what fills you do as long as you get back quickly to the groove." I think a good drummer with keep the groove and not have to act flashy. Dont let the groove suffer because of flashyness

Exactly and this cat wasn't coming back in on the 'one' at all! I noticed it immediately!
