i played on these recordings a while back, and im really not happy with my bass sound throughout the album. i played a carvin XB76 recorded direct. i left the active EQ on my bass flat- should i have boosted the lows if i wanted more low end? or should the producer have boosted my lows when he did some EQing?

tell me what you think -

from 1-10, does my tone stink or is it just me?

it's just you...

your tone is tight and punchy and it suits the band very nicely...it stands out against the guitars and drums and fits the kick drum very well...

the tracks are great! a couple of the tracks, the vocals are a bit pitchy (a couple they're SLAMMIN!)...

the guitars sound great, too...

I like your tone, it sounds great to me.
Like the band a lot too, which is rare for me when it comes to bands on Myspace!

I agree, the bass tone suits the band and music well. A hair more low end would be good, but really only a little.

If you'd pumped the lows on your bass when recording, the producer would have had a hard time getting rid of it and achieving this tone, which while it may not be ideal to you, apparently appeals to a lot of us.

I say trust your producer/audio engineer. It's what you pay them for.

I really don't know why you would want more low-end. Your tone is tight-punchy and it sits pretty well in the mix (the slower songs have you pretty low overall, while ballads need more bass than any other instrument, IMHO).

I don't know why, but The Blood Flow reminded me of very-early Rush: your bass doesn't sound as bell-like as Geddy's p he used on the album (and that, IMHO is a good thing), but the song structure has a lot of drive and boogy.

And for a myspace band, vocals are pretty tight and fun, wich is the aspect that always gets overlooked by the whole "let's just have the rythmn guitar approximate pitch" wich is very prevalent nowadays.

well, im glad everyone seems to think its an alright sound..i dont know, i guess since its a rock gig i'd rather play a fender on that kind of recording? but i felt like it wasent oldschool enough for a p-bass sound..

anyway, thanks for the input everyone.

It's not bad at all. I think personally I'd like to hear a little more highs in it, but during the solo in "The Blood Flow," it comes through great.

Am I the only one that thinks these guys sound a lot like John Rutsey-era Rush? (That's a huge compliment bro!)

i hear what you're saying about the Rush-esque sound and agree it's a big compliment. as for the bass tone, it sounds great, as does your playing.

very nice.

ive never heard that they we actually sound like rush..only the singer...after that album was finished we changed the lineup a lot, new drummer and rhythm guitar..now were a lot more on the funky side.

you guys listen to much Slade? Its not a Rush thing, go back lads...its Noddy Holder vibe!

I think what you might be missing is a bit of amp speaker tone in your bass. I though the bass could be a bit more prominent in the mix with a tad more lows.

I liked Velvet.

Good Stuff

yes a tube amp for the complexity of tone and then a miced speaker for the realism, mix that with a DI signal going into a high end mic pre-amp and you would be much happier, then you could blend the 2 signals until you got what you wanted. Clarity & Meat combined.

It doesnt have to be a monster amp either, get a 50watt traynor guitar combo and record at medium to low volumes...you would be stunned at how good your bass sounds, especially for your style, use an LDC mic to pic up as much air as possible

Some DI stuff sounds great on its own, but you need to have the right set-up. I used straight DI on the bass on myspace

the low end is tricky, usually boosting bass is not a good idea
the low frequencies can muddy up and make things boomy in a hurry, but each situation is different and needs to be addressed as such.
