| | | I cannot see/hear any youtube stuff here...will only add that "Bassball" is a fast Funk/Fusion groove in "E" w/ a long bass solo/concerto.
The recorded version of "Bassball" was happenin' enough(Secrets' 1st album, cassette-only)...LIVE (& very much uptempo vs. the recording), certain themes popped up in the solo although Horne did add things. One time, I saw Secrets in December & Holiday tunes were sprinkled throughout the long bass solo.
There is also the story about the time Secrets opened for Miles Davis in Richmond (the Mosque?).
During Daryll Jones' bass solo, the crowd was chanting "Bass-Ball"! Bass-Ball! Bass-Ball"!

| | | | I love his playing... clean, precise, musical, and upside down!!!!
He's in a SMOKING country band that I can't remember the name of at this point. He can just lay it down also!!! Wonderful player, and I believe a big Thunderfunk/Accugroove guy.
The first time I heard him or even of him, he was playing a pink Lakland with Tricia Yearwood (I think it was Tricia) at some 4th of July thing, and he just SMOKED! |

| | | This is "Bassball" (the 2nd link in the OP's post)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYmf1LJg8V8
Hot Apple Pie, Waylon Jennings, Tricia Yearwood, Tanya Tucker, etc aside...Secrets was 'the band' for Horne (much like the Flecktones is 'the band' for Wooten).
Other guys in Secrets included-
Carter Beauford (the drummer on the album version of "Bassball").
Tim Reynolds
Butch Taylor
John D'Earth
Dane Bryant
There was a time when you could see this band around Va. Beach (Jewish Mother, Hopper's, etc) up close & personal (about 3 feet away) for a $2 cover charge.

I think Keith is from Richmond, VA, so not surprised he could be seen in Tidewater area previously. Both these songs were available for free download in 1999 from the bass channel on the music site Michael Robertson started previous to his going on to start Lindows. Can't remember the name of the site, but still have the mp3's, and they're way better than the Youtube examples here. Keith is a monster player, IMO.

This is where I was first exposed to him. Keith is from Hopewell, VA. A bit south of Richmond. Can you imagine he and Victor Wooten gigging in the same area!

...even worse. Oteil Burbridge was also gigging around here in the early-mid '80s.
The same cover band had Billy Drummond on cans. It hasn't been the same since those guys left.
James Genus is also from the peninsula...though, I don't recall hearing about him until after he left the area.
An early bass pioneer around here was a guy named Benny Bialy...late '60s thru the late '70s, he sounded like a funky Jaco ("Barnary Coast" sorta vibe) on a P-bass.
Another mid-'70s guy was Rusty Springfield...played in an 'electric' Jazz trio called Quite Fire; he played a natural wood fretless P-bass w/ a maple neck. He did pop up in Bass Player a few years back (playing for Barnum & Bailey).

James Genus is from Hampton.

For some reason, I still think there is another cat from this area (possibly Portsmouth). I have a picture in my head (heavyset, darkskinned cat) but I just can't think of the name.......... |

There's no exposure like internet exposure. |
