Killer Bassplayer on a Early 1960s Song

Sign in to disble this ad
Although I've heard this song a thousand times over the years, I recently heard Dusty Springfirld's "Son of a Preacherman" and REALLY heard the bass for the first time. Unbelieveable bassplaying, for my taste and ears,
almost overplaying from an arranger's point of view, but so fluid and melodic that I guess the producer felt like I did and left it in; busy, but killer playing.

Go find the song, listen and tell me what you think.

Who is the bassist?

TOMMY COGBILL!!! The late, great Cogbill who was also a killer guitar player (he played guitar on Aretha's "Think" after Jerry Jemmott to the bass spot for that record). He's also the bassist on "Funky Broadway" among a ton of other stuff.

About two years ago Bass Player Magazine had a transcription of that line, and an article about the recording. It's a P bass with flats played through a Fender Twin Reverb with only one speaker. Yep, they used the 12" speaker in that open back cabinet to record the bass.

GREAT line, great performance by Dusty. Check out Joan Osborne's version too- it's every bit as good.

John

That bass track has been sampled more than once and used as the bed for modern recordings. With good reason!

Digs out the Pulp Fiction soundtrack again.

Oh, and Cypress Hill's Hit's from the Bong is one of those many songs with this sample.

According to Wiki it's Gene Chrisman on drums.

Yeah that Joss Stone is one AWESOME singer.

The only shame is that so far in her career (and don't forget that she's still only 21 or 22) I don't think she's found the material to sing that will propel her into the superstar league.

There's a clip somewhere of her when she was 12 or 13 singing ON THE RADIO (Donna SUmmer?) on a UK talent show - man, she was awesome even then.

I know, I've never paid attention to the bass on this song before. It is great! Thanks for helping me notice it.

It's amazing! If you listen to early rock n roll records from the late 50's and into the 60's, the quality of musianship is just really amazing. Especially when you consider that the pay for a session guy (which they almost all were), was pretty low. True musicians with a real love for music (and not much desire for rock stardom).
