I think Ashes of the Wake is one of the most intense albums that I've come across in a while. It is really refreshing, intelligent metal.

However, I notice the bass has no presence in the mix. Once in a blue moon you will hear some of the high mids of his tone.

All in all it's a great sounding album.

I've heard Campell's tone on the Killadelphia outakes, and it sounded awful to me. But perhaps that's just my taste in tone.

What do you guys think? I assume these cats all knew what they were doing when they produced the album. Maybe he is just filling in a certain frequency range (one that you can barely make out)?

Typical boring metal bass, think ...And Justice for All. Pretty decent album though, and I'm not one for modern mainstream metal generally speaking.

he's just playing whatever the guitarists are playing, which in and of itself is a pretty impressive feat, but john has been playing a little more on the new album sacrament, so you'll be able to hear him much better, though it's still going to be pocket playing.

I like their first 2 albums much better.

If you haven't already...check out "New American Gospel" and "As the Palaces Burn." As far the bass goes i think it sits better in the mix on those 2 albums. Too bad the bass gets buried in the mix w/ a lot of newer metal bands.

I can hear him fine on Ashes of the Wake its' just that he's doubling what the guitars are doing. And what like bassfacekevin said, it's and impressive feat. He's a very good pick player.

I am not knocking his playing- I think it's top notch. Just his tone got pushed so far back it's almost impossible to tell his bass from the kick drum.

I agree, the sound would benefit as a whole from more defined punchy bass.
