Latin Rock Recommendations

Sign in to disble this ad
Hola latin rock fans,

Some years ago I played in a really fun latin rock band, "Paz Y Miel". We did some covers and originals and I just loved it. Since, I've really become a fan of latin rock but don't know the genre well enough, so I'm looking for recommendations.

I love La Mosca, particularly "Hoy Estoy Peor Que Ayer", "Quiero Verte Mal," "Para No Verte Mas," and "Te Quiero Comer La Boca." I love Vilma, Palma, y Vampiros' "Fondo Profundo" but haven't heard too much else of theirs, (just a couple of tunes and didin't really care for them). I do like Mana as well, which seems prerequisite. Of course I love classics like El Chicano and War.

Anything that really incorporates guajira is fantastic. I'm a plena, son, and bolero fan as well. Can't stand the mariachi stuff though.

Thanks.

Fania All-Stars?
...one is called Latin-Rock-Soul. Kinda in an early Santana vibe, IMO.
Billy Cobham & Jan Hammer are guests, IIRC.

Órale jazzbo!
If I had to suggest 1 album, my personal Favorite for " Latin Rock" would be the classic "Santana III" Although "Abraxas" was the Bomb, Santana III with Neal Schon and his Clapton/ Hendrix influence, really took that up a couple of notches! And the 2 guitar assault was truely great!

Sweet guys, thank you so much. I went through iTunes and listened to samples of all these bands. I liked Sergent Garcia, Jarabe de Palo, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Jaguares, and Rabanes best. I've heard Juanes before, and it's okay.

I definitely like the stuff that combines traditional latin rhythms, like guajira, best. While Sol D Menta and Puya definitely had some great songs, the harder stuff doesn't appeal to me.

these folks all fall under the generic category of 'rock en espanol' but musically, they're all over the map.

aterciopelados
cafe tacvba
julieta venegas
santa sabina
los tres
soda stereo
molotov (not a fan, but still good music)
kinky
los amigos invisibles
plastilina mosh
ely guerra
austin tv
cultura profetica
spam all stars

if you're looking for more 'out there' stuff, there's a great compilation called 'panorama neutral.'

Ozomatli is a great band with a bunch of influences, rock being one. Definitely not a rock band but a great blend of funk/latin/rock/hiphop. You've probably heard of them considering your location. I actually saw them play live at Amoeba Records on Haight.
