Latin vamp suggestions

Sign in to disble this ad
So, it seems every time I vamp the beginning of a latin-esque tune, it always seems to sound like "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". While I do enjoy Pretzel Logic some times, I would really like to get out of this rut...any suggestions on what I could listen to for ideas?

Go buy

"the Cuban Bass" by Carlos del Peurto.

or check out "Buena Vista Social Club" on CD and DVD.

Dizzy Gillespie's recordings of Cuban Jazz. like Manteca.

RDLTN was taken from Horace Silver's "Song for My Father", BTW. Check out some of HC's other work, too

Latin-esque, huh?
There are more forms out there than Samba or Boss Nova (like your Horace Silver/Steely Dan groove that you fall into).
So...check out the other forms. Grab a Latin drum book or a couple of the decent Latin-esque Bass books out there (Carlos Del Puerta, Oscar Stagnaro, Lincoln Goines, etc) or Rebeca Mauleon's Salsa Guide...check out some of the albums mentioned in those books & have fun.

Horace Silver has some great Latin feel vamps and tunes - some other favourites :

Senor Blues
Nica's Dream
Cape Verdean Blues

etc etc.

There are also some great Freddie Hubbard Latin bass vamps :

Gibraltar is one that springs to mind...?

Thanks for the suggestions...I'm going to check them out.

Jimk...thanks for the book ideas..I happen to have an older copy of Afro-cuban grooves for bass and drums-Funkifying the Clave by Goines, (love the title), that my son (the drummer) had lying around.

Appreciate the info folks!
