Learning funk

Sign in to disble this ad
I know this is probably a tall order, but I would like to know what 3 CD's to buy (more could always come later) for me to learn how to play funk. In other words, classic funk bass grooves. I think that I would lean more towards finger style, rather than slapping, at least for starters.

By way of comparison, I learned to play swing by listening to Ray Brown on some Oscar Peterson CD's. His playing was simple enough for me to comprehend, yet brilliant.

Something like that, for funk.

Fingerstyle? Any Tower Of Power cd will do! Rocco will cure what ails you! Check out any old school Gap Band cd's. Don't discount the slap stuff though. You can still listen to it. I suggest Slave, Con-funk-shun, Commodores, Dazz Band, etc. Also, check out some DC Go-Go music. Lots of funk grooves there. Lastly, check out my Funk 101 thread sticky. There's plenty to listen to (and more to come).

Flood by Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters will teach you a lot of what you need to know about finger style funk playing.

Funk has been approached differently by so many people, some of my favs:

The Meters = Best of

Jamiroquai = first 3 albums

RHCP = Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Raw, heavy funk in a rocky in your face punk kind of way =) But many of the guitar parts and the way flea and chad lay it down is funk to me.

Michael Jackson = Off the Wall

The Brothers Johnson = Best Of

Commodores = Zoom

Just listen to as much as you can! I still have much listening and playing to do at 20 years of age but it's all out there for us to soak up =) +1 on the James Brown book and any live CDs of his you can pick up. Also James Jamerson is one of the funkiest dudes to ever play and though MOtown ain't strictly 'funk' he's the main inspiration to any bassist who can call himself a funk bassist =)

+1 to the James Brown book. It's not the whole song, but very educational. I've had it for awhile and I'm still working through the 2nd CD.

For fingerstyle funk, my recommendations would start with:

James Brown - The CD of JB
http://www.amazon.com/CD-JB-James-Brown/dp/B000008DS5
Especially "I Got the Feelin'", "Licking Stick", "Mother Popcorn", and "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine".

Tower of Power - Soul With a Capital S
http://www.amazon.com/Soul-Capital-S.../dp/B000063CNF
Especially "What Is Hip?", "You're Still A Young Man", and "Funk The Dumb Stuff".

Earth Wind & Fire: Greatest Hits
http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Wind-Fir.../dp/B00000FC5H
Especially "Serpentine Fire", "That's The Way Of The World", "Shining Star", and "September".

Keep it in the pocket...
