legal question: performance rights on recordings

When you record for a producer does he or she own the rights to your performances? Are studio musicians entitled to any of the profits from album sales. All of this is all assuming no contracts are involved. Any input and advice are much appreciated.

if there are no contracts, then every situtation would be different, i suppose...

but in general,
session musicians get nothing from album sales.
and producers only own the rights to the performance, if their contract explicitly states so.
and that's pretty rare.
