1. Some microphone that makes it sound distorted/through a telephone.
2. Looks like a bass drum mic or something.
3. Shure?
4. To give him that distorted sound.

I haven't seen the mic but I'm pretty sure it's a harmonica mic. They sound distorted when used for vocals like in Tommy the Cat and Jerry was a Race Car Driver. Could be something completely different though but a lot of people use harmonica mics of distorted vocals.

I think its a Shure Green Bullet(or similar bullet mic) designed for Harmonica. I also play blues harp, and G.A.S over harp gear too, so watching Les singing into a bullet mic was like... -twitches-

He uses that mic a ton these days. It's funny because he has two singing positions. The first is a regular stance in front of his normal mic, and the second is with his foot on his monitor leaning forward.

From wikipedia:

"Claypool also has a Sandman sticker on his bullet microphone."

As a tribute to Mark Sandman.

"TOADIES singer does same thing with two mics"...the mic is used on different sections of songs, tommy the cat is perfect example..Ive seen LES a few more times then most people have...and he uses it for more distorted, wide open singing/talking..

It's a pretty common thing. I've even seen Ani DiFranco do the same trick. Basically you have one mic for your "clean" singing that goes through compressor, EQ, reverb, whatever. Then you have a "dirty" mic that gets fed through more effects. A lot of times it's used for a gritty lo-fi sound, so harmonica mics and the like are popular because they're so easy to overdrive with your voice.

while this is true for the album version, tom waits does not tour w/ les, and being one of his biggest songs, he does play the song live.

fwiw, i thought i recalled reading that tom waits sang into a bullhorn for the TtC vocals.
