Level 42 are back with a vengeance........

Hey there, well Level 42 finally have a new CD coming out in September. Once again Mark King will demonstrate what I consider to be the slickest slapping and grooving period. Check out this link to get a glimpse of what's in store. IMO this slapping is as good as it gets, so just sit back and enjoy it.

MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCH Better! The one thing I hated about Level 42 was the tone and song structures were so... 80s (can you blame 'em)

With a modern twist, I assumed they'd be badass... this is pretty good. Is that an effect on Mark's bass during the intro, or is something doubling/harmonizing? It sounded shakey, but past the intro, it sounded great.

Thanks for the 411 - I haven't paid much attention to Level in a while since I kinda thought MK was semi - retired.

The sample tune is great - seems like a return to the sound and style they had the first few albums. I figure this album may only be available as an import in the US, but I'll still get it.

I just wish he'd use a bass good for slapping. He would sound so much better and "this decade" with a jazz bass, IMHO.

Just listened to the clips from the RetroGlide page.

YEAH!!!!!!

My number one influence when it comes to the slappin and poppin goofy-ness.

I wore out a few L42 tapes learning his stuff.

Dive Into The Sun is SLAMMIN"!!!!
It WILL be on the short list to learn with one of my bands!!!
I'm not sure how it would work out with the country band though....hmm

Actually his preferred studio bass was a MM StingRay in the later years.
A lot of the recient stuff (Guaranteed, Forever Now) was done with it.
There was also a limited edition Fender Jazz (the Mark King sig model) relaesed only in the UK. As well as another UK company GB Basses who made a few Jazz type basses for him.

The clips sound like his new Status signiture model the King Bass. But could even be the MM S'Ray I guess, or an Alembic Mrak King model.

Not sure if the Alembic MK bass ever made it to a recording though.

<edit, Look what I found!!)
AHH!!! check this out:

LOL.........yeah, I hear ya brother. My Classic Rock/R&B band are not huge on thumping either, but this new Level stuff sure gets the heart pumping a little faster again. Level is still my favorite band after 20 years. To give kudos to Mark King, every once and a while I throw a triplet into an ending of one our sets, I get this look from the other band members like - what the hell was that!!!!??????? and I say what was what?........Next!!!!

Just pre-ordered with Amazon UK.

Weird....it's cheaper ordering from the UK even with shipping to the US than the order it domestically.

iTunes has an interesting live disc (available only song by song BTW) called "The Sun Goes Down Live".
It has a few tunes I couldn't get before live.

Man, I'm all over this! New break tunes! Woohoo! I started playing Jamiroquai on breaks lately, and without exception, people are grooving to it HARD! They've never heard them before, people are actually dancing to our break tunes now...so they've been prepped. Now we have to actually learn some for our set- I love it when a plan comes together!

That sounds pretty sweet. I remember doing a modeling job once, and the hairdresser found out I played bass. He couldn't stop telling me about Level 42 and how cool Mark King was. I might have to buy this CD you speak of.

Awesome! I can't wait for that record to come out. I've got tickets to see Level 42 live in October, 4th row and all, it should be an amazing show!

Yeah, it's a pre-order. I've ordered from them (UK) many times, and they're usually pretty quick.
