Lightning Bolt, Sound, Help!!!

Sign in to disble this ad
Ooooooook, i am a large fan of all things lightning bolt and for years it has puzzled me as to how Mr Brian Gibson gets THAT sound.
A specific example would be the sound of the bass on13 Monsters, you know? Where it's a distrotion that sounds really grindy, not so fuzzy but really harsh like a GRGRGRGRGRGRGRGRRRRGH.
I've read up on here what pedals he tends to use but none of those (in my experience) create that sound.
Would i be right in thinking that it's more the fact that he pushes his speakers way more harder than they should be pushed and that the sound is coming from that?
Any information would be very much apprieciated and would help me to lay to rest this huge question that has pagued me for what seems and eternity but is actually around 5 years or so.

You should repost this in the effects forum, or better yet look up our pedalboard of the stars thread that has Brian's rig posted in it.

Haha! I love that video. I remember searching for LB videos on youtube a while ago and found that. I watched it over and over.

the 13 monsters sound - to me - sounds so heavily based on multiple octaves that i would recommend trying a micro-pog (or proper pog).

and fuzz, obviously

FWIW, i can get a pretty close Lightning Bolt impersonation using a Micro pog with all 3 tones engaged, and a barker assmaster with the sensitivity turned up pretty high. this isn't what they use but will put you in the same region...

basically fuzz + octave. whammy for the really high bits.

EDIT from memory of some pix, he uses TWO boss ODB-3s. madman.
EDIT again - might be bi-amped, they use so many speakers...

Octaver y'say? Is that what gives it the "grrrrrrrgrgrgg" grindyness?

Yeah i checked out his pedal board but have never been able to see how any of that could get him to that sound.
Cheers for the replies guys!
