It threw me a little with the years going backwards . . .
I definitely had to go with 1979-70. It seems several genres (rock
) hit their primes in the 70's with an unprecedented level of freedom and innovation that has not been seen since. Artists were no longer afraid to record songs longer than 3 minutes, and they were no longer afraid to blur the distinction between genres, or at least to borrow from other genres, which they did in very complimentary and musical ways.
The 80's, instead of building on the new heights reached in the 70's, seemed like a huge counter-reaction to everything that was done in the 70's. And a large chunk of music since the 80's seems like a misguided effort to reach back and grab something from the 70's.
