ok so lately i've been getting into jam bands (grateful dead, allman bros) and live albums with extended versions of various songs. starting with the kids are alright soundtrack (which i had to buy after seeing the dvd), i've got some dead, cream, jimi hendrix, grand funk railroad (which is fantastic), i'm going to get the live at leeds eventually ($36!! ), but i'm looking for some other suggestions. i was in f.y.e. the other day and they had a 9.99 special on albums and noticed that they had a couple of live yes albums. now i like yes, but i'm wondering it's worth getting a live album of theirs. i mean most of their stuff is long winded as it is.. so i can't imagine it's really going to be any different. anyone know?
also suggestions/comments?

In general, commercially produced live YES is much like studio YES with the exception of Steve Howe getting to stretch a bit.I say commercially produced because there are things out there on bootlegs that you cant find commercially. The exception is the YES boxset which has some things that are different due to who is playing keyboards at the time.
Respond with titles and I can show you a way to listen to them before you buy most likely.
The Keys series probably have the best sound quality, along with YES Symphonic.Yessongs is pretty bad sound quality wise, but the band,Howe in particular,is on fire.

maybe not 'jam band' music, but it sure jams. scott lefaro's bass playing on the evans disc is mind blowing. |

As for jam bands- I would look around for some live Gov't Mule and Derek Trucks band... the DTB and Mule DVDs are outstanding- especially Mule's A tale of two cities!
Great thing about Mule is they sell all of their shows for download:
I saw them a couple of years ago in Covington (Andy Hess rules!) and then downloaded the show www.mule.net |

I got a Live Phish New Years Eve 95 set that is pretty good as well. Great Jams.
The With A little Help From Our Friends Gov't Mule set kicks major ass. Great Allen Woody playing throughout.
But my two favorite live albums still have to be Grand Funk Railroad's Caught In The Act, and Ten Years After Live at the Fillmore. Repeated listenings, and listening at high volume are a must. Some other kick ass good rock n roll live albums are Mountain's Twin Peaks and The Road Goes On Forever, the James Gang's Live in Concert from 1971, ISIS's Live 2, Fu Manchu's Go For It! Live, Clutch's Full Fathom Five and Live at the Googolplex, Zappa and The Mothers' Roxy and Elsewhere, and Corrosion of Conformity's Live Volume.
And of course The Allman Brothers Band's Live at the Fillmore is one of the best live albums ever. Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade Live set Vol 1&2 are really good IMO. Set 2 is a cover of the entire Animals album. Great stuff. I also really like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones' Live From the Middle East. Ska punk/metal at it's finest. Queens of the Stone Age's Over The Years and Through The Woods is a great one as well. |

Yessongs is, IMHO, the best Yes ever. The guitar solo at the end of Siberian Khatru is one of the hottest Howe solos on vinyl (or CD). That's an example of why he was always top-rated back in the day. And to me (OK, admittedly a die-hard Yes fanatic for 30+years), SK remains the best "open a concert" tune ever (of course, the build-up from Firebird Suite helps set the mood).
YMMV naturally.

YMMV naturally. | I love that guitar solo, but for me "Yessongs" was all downhill after the "Firebird" excerpt. (Sorry!)
My own suggestions for live rock albums with plenty of jamming:
"At Fillmore East" ~ Allman Brothers (BTW, don't get the compilation titled "The Fillmore Concerts" -- two of the tracks are edited together from different performances... not good)
"Live Dead" ~ Grateful Dead (the version of "Dark Star" is a masterpiece)
"Band of Gypsys" ~ Jimi Hendrix (Hendrix's funk period... "Machine Gun" contains what is often called the greatest electric guitar solo in history)
"Live" ~ Johnny Winter And
"Full House" ~ J. Geils Band
"In Concert" ~ Derek and the Dominos (Eric Clapton with superb band)
Venturing into blues, "Live at the Regal" by B.B. King is amazing

heard it when I was a teenager, loved it ever since.
Amazing versions of standards like Johnny B. Goode and Jumpin Jack Flash. Oh, and Rick Derringer didn't suck either.
