Looking for some more Avant Garde oriented Hip Hop

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been listening to some weird ass stuf lately. Dalek, cLOUDDEAD, MF Doom, MadVillain, Gravediggaz,Buck 65, Mr.Lif, and some Dan the Automater.

I'm looking for some weird hip hop. My primary interest is the backing tracks. I like them to be weird. Noisy, psychedelic , scratch-tastic, exotic, just some cool stuff that is way different than the funk oriented stuff of Pop Hop like 50 Cent& Dre, and Nelly etc......
Some harder funk backing tracks would be cool, but I can't stand that smoooooooth **** or drum machines that click-click-click, you know, on Pop rap songs.

Lyrics come close second for me. I , like most underground rap fans, like my lyrics politically, humor , or abstract oriented.

Any suggestions you guys have will be acknowledged.

i'm not sure if it fits your musical tastes, but lyrically, atmosphere is good and has a huge underground following (if you haven't already heard of him)

Sonic Sum

Check out "Sanity Annex" by Sonic Sum. Their bassist plays some great lines. Cool stream of conscious lyrics too.

Anti-pop Consortium is cool. So is Mike Ladd.

Cunninlynguists are great, they're probably one of my favorite hip-hop groups out today. But they're not that avant-garde, Kno is a fantastic producer, but his stuff is still pretty closely tied to old funk and soul samples; or beats of that nature.

If you haven't already, check out the Antipop Consortium and their member's solo projects, particularly Beans. Prefuse 73 is a producer that mixes house/rave/electronica with hip-hop a lot with really fantastic results. Still very funky, but not skimping on the beep-bleep-bip.

Cannibal Ox and Company Flow(along with most of the rest of the Def Jux family). Cann Ox are sick sick sick, and they're produced by El-P (also of Company Flow & solo), who has repeatedly mentioned the huge influence King Crimson has had on his production. So he should be right up your alley.

You could also, if you wanted, check out the Anticon label, they seem like a bunch of posers to me. It's a love 'em/hate 'em sort of thing. I think Why? (also of cLOUDDEAD) is alright, but the rest feels contrived to me. You may feel differently, though, who knows?

Kool Keith is pretty weird, check out him, his groups (Ultramagnetic MCs) and his many aliases (Dr. Octagon, Black Elvis, Dr. Dooom, etc.)

Also, MF Doom used to be good friends with this guy GM Grimm (formerly MF Grimm) who is a really dark and heavy rapper. Takes some getting used to, but he's got some good stuff. Grimm had a rap group that was pretty kicking as well-->Monsta Island Czars.

you have already refered some good stuff, I'm really into mr.lif and a lot of stuff from Definitive jux records, Cannibal ox was sick but I think they are no longer working together.

Be sure to check out DJ shadow too, and that new UK project, Gnarls Barkley.

the first cLOUDDEAD is one of my top 5 all time favorite CDs (cus of the hundred of times i listened to it stoned/tripping out of my mind)

the second one i didn't like nearly as much...it just didnt have that same airy flow that the first did.

but I heard they broke up, which is a shame, I only got to see them live once

Hell YES! My favorite hip hop album ever!( if you can call it that )

I went to Borders this morning with all intentions of buying a crap load of hip hop. I come back with none. I completely forgot about it when I saw the new Celtic Frost cd and some freshly imported CAN and Van Der Graaf remasters. Hip hop will have to wait till next paycheck. Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll definitely look into what you've suggested.

Antipop Consortium, MF Grimm, Cannibal Ox, Company Flo are just a few I'm gonna check out. Tackhead sounds cool too, I love Doug Wimbish.

As for Anticon........... I like Sage Francis and some Atmosphere but most of it is kinda..............eeehgghh
