Funk is feeling........
I don't feel it on your songs.
Check out a old 90's band called DAG, especially their first CD, songs like Lovely Jane, etc. Check out George Clinton / Parliament.
Go in the rock . funk vein and by all means check out the Dan Reed Network.
Best of luck! |

I prefer my funk uber-tight and extra greasy though.

I hadn't heard of The Meters, so I caught some soundbites on iTunes and I think I'll get one of their albums. Thanks, morf, for the tip! Fire On the Bayou is definite funk. Great tune!

While it does have it's funky moments, it switches up and is sorta all over the place. I'd say it's more Indie/Experiemental/Avant Garde than Funk. |

Its not a continuous groove, and its a very short riff, one bar only. I trhink if you had two bars of riff there, it might sound more like it.
Funk isnt that hard to define, and it's not just a feel. Typically the bass runs a 2-4 bar groove all tune long, with breakdowns, of course. You often have an interplay, where, say the bass rests for 1/2 bar, and the hi hat or keys or voices, count for half a bar. Lots of "breathing" in funk.
The second time the bass "riffs", its completley out of funk mode and you're running root-5-8, as in a straight up rock ditty. Sweet arse bass line , and it tickles my funkabilities, but its not locked in funk mode. Its doesnt breathe, if you get my drift. Now, at around 2:15 the bass starts to breathe and the keys fill the breathe, do you hear that!? Thats the funk man. Same riff as early, but there is difference. And also, when you ring the root, fifth, octave, give it some funk by resting an 1/8 somewhre in that run.
BUUUUUUUTTTT>>>>>> Nice work! To FUNK IT, I would focus on multi-bar riffs. Heavy breathing ( or catching a breath).Again, I count one bar in that tune , a four count. Tack on a second four count riff to finish the phrasing and you'll see it has a bit different feel to it. Get the bass to take some deep breaths, let the strings and keys fill the void.
I dig the tune. It has a good , deep, feel to it. But Da Funk does have some basis characteristics you'll have to imbed in the tune to really make it shout FUNK! SO, for now, it's, "Relax, It Wants to Funk ". Almost smells like it. Make it wreak!
Its important for us aspirining funkateers, and funkfathers alike, to not offer opinions like " its not funk!", without offering SOME analysis of why. More detailed the better. We're not going to breed funkateers and foster understadning of Da FUnk! without being ALWAYS constructive in our critisizms, swallowing our own faces, and letting Mutha Funk guide us from the right place, feel, and therefore, response. Yes!?
Its just like fixing the groove talking with your hands and inner soul, but this is with our voices. Dig?
Peace. Out.
