I'll tell you one advantage that vinyl definitely has over CD - time limitations. These days a lot of bands feel that they have to fill up the entire 74 minutes that will fit on a CD, and you end up with 30 minutes of decent music and 45 minutes of crap.

A recent study has shown that the normal human attention span for listening to any single recording is around 40 minutes at one sitting. And if you think about it, most of the great pop records have clocked in around this amount. Sad thing is, the average CD buyer feels cheated now if there is less than an hour's worth of music.

You are incredibly correct...the music industry is a pain...i had heard about the attention span before, and i have noticed in myself too...

the bad thing is that when you are, you know, "getting busy", it's kinda bad to have to stop and have to change the side...

Where can I get a good turntable for playing LPs? Would one of those DJ turntables do the same job as a real one? How much should I expect to pay for a really good turntable?

I like CDs and LPs the same amount. But I can't stand tapes!!!

i'm not too fond of cassettes either... minidiscs have those beat and then some!

those dj turntables are indeed "real" turntables. spinning platter, tone arm, the whole nine. but they're totally manual (i.e., the tone arm won't return to its resting position when the side of an album is finished). a very good stereo store should still have semi-automatic turntables. plus, you're obviously on the web, so there's certainly plenty of places to buy a good turntable (and more food for it) online.

what's your price range? for $319, the entry level <a href="http://fredsoundofmusic.com/sumiko.html">Sumiko</a> table is probably considered the best value on the market for non high-end stuff. i want to get one of these for my next b-day.

the DJ tables are indeed different. they run on "direct drive" as opposed to the traditional "belt drive" which kinda plays the records more steadily. i don't think you'll hear a HUGE difference, but the whole point of listening to music on vinyl is getting the most out of your listening experience, so why half-ass it? i mean, unless you're getting it for free or something.

it's been out as a full-length double cd with bonus multimedia elements for quite some time. check your local stores or preferred internet music store.

A vote for CD format here.Mainly for convienance(sp?) sake.

I do dearly miss the great artwork on the outsides and insides of all those killer LPs from the 70`s and 80`s though.
