The Main Monkey Business Bass

I found this "isolated" bass track of Geddy on the track "The Main Monkey Business" from Snakes and Arrows. Its pretty cool to listen to although I think there is too much Sansamp distortion on his bass (or at least thats how it sounds to me):

Enjoy

I love his tone there, shows opinions differ between people. Thats awesome man! I saw then live in Pittsburgh from the 8th row!

What an awesome show!

I think it sounds good and I obviously like his playing, but if you listen to the isolated Moving Pictures bass tracks, THAT sounds like a tube amp pushed to overdrive. This sounds a little too "metallic" and trebley IMHO. Still love Geddy though.

I also like to tell Peyton Manning how to correctly pass the football while Im sitting on my couch with a beer.

On its own, it does sound rather trebley, but in the mix with the guitar it works out quite well.

What a cool tune with the musical "conversation" going on between players.

I read a recent interview with Geddy where he points out that by itself his bass tone is ratty but in the mix it works out great.
That's something we learn if we're paying attention and/or recording - live or in the studio. Your sound in the band context is very different.

I see what you're saying with the distortion, but I also love his tone here. It might be a BIT too much, but really I can't complain, I like it very much.

I think its just the style of distortion I am not crazy about. It sounds very much like a Sansamp (IMO) and not like a natural tube overdrive (like the old Moving Pictures tracks. Those have distortion and treble but it sounds more natural) Its still very cool though!

I agree on the distortion. It would be so nice with the warmer sound he used to have from 76-82 or whatever it was. The ultimate rock tone IMO.
Not that his current sound is bad.. it really rocks! And, it fits well in a modern mix.
