MAMBO!!!

Well my jazz band is playing this selection that is apparently a mambo piece, and I totally dig the grooves in it. I need more mambo! Where should I look as far as artists?

Not for about 30 years!!

Back on Track, the obvious name to look for and nothing to do with ancient TV - is Tito Puente!!

The actor who portrayed him was Desi Arnaz. He was a guitarist and vocalist with Xavier Cugat and then worked with his own band for many years. The band used on the TV show may have been the actual Desi Arnaz Orchestra.

Oh, and for some modern touches with a little edge, I'd check out Marc Ribot and his CD entitled, "Marc Ribot Y Los Cubanos Postizos". Excellent album.

cachao lopez is one of the best. when jaco pastorius was asked about who he felt was the most complete bass plkayer, he said israel cachao lopez. not just an awesome bass player but a pioneer of latin jazz and salsa. his descarga and master sessions cds are classics of the latin genre. check out the cd/dvd combo of "ahora si" where he is shown at 80 years old writing and recording a whole album of awesome music live with some of the luminaries of latin music over the course of 3 days. pretty inspiring stuff...

When Poncho Sanchez came to UNF, his bass player made some great suggestions. I have a few of these records and they are great. The idea of the lecture was to study the guys from the beginning and move forward. This is a lot of listening in these notes:

I transferred the notes to my notepad in Windows, and copied and pasted them here. The first few groups are in order of genres, and in parentheses are suggested albums, except with bass players, where what's in the parentheses are the group they played with.

I believe group one is mambo, and group two is more modern salsa. Check it out:
