This should rightfully suck, but it ends up being surprisingly cool. She turns this dance club hit into a melancholy rock ballad, and against all odds it works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMB6YOWzQMY

As I've gotten older I've realized that a lot of the pop music that I would have dismissed out of hand in my youth is interesting to analyze from a compositional standpoint.
Not liking the artists who perform these songs is one thing, but appreciating the craft of the songwriters who put them together is another.
Reading "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" not only permanently affixed Jamerson as one of my biggest influences, but it made me realize that the way Motown operated was hardly different than how pop "stars" are built today.
But I digress. It was a cool remake and I like it better than the "original". |

I like Mandy Moore's version a lot! Rihanna did not 'write' the song nor does she 'own' the song just in case those opinions regarding 'stealing' a song come up! |

OP: thanks for this... it was a "soothing" start for my day lol

If you listen to Rhianna's "Umbrella" live or recorded, you can hear that it is structured like an eighties power ballad, not an r&b dance tune or slow jam. Although I really like Rhianna's version (and I like seeing Rhianna prance around ), I admit that mandy Moore's version does let the listener concentrate more on the song's nice lyrics.

Placing the syllabic break as umbr-ella forces the first syllable to be pronounced as though there was an extra vowel: umber-ella. Placing it properly allows the word to be pronounced phonetically: um-brella.
I grant that when singing you have to allow a bit of freedom, but adding a whole new vowel sound is too far, IMO. |

She does have a good voice though.

Edit: man after listening to more of the Youtube videos this Marie Digby is really talented very interesting style too.

I love both versions of the song, and especially love the prancing! I happened to catch part of a Rihanna show last summer, and she really is very good live, which is a little surprising given my expectations of the R&B/pop people's live performance.

And not to attack Marie but I think she could could have done better with that song by alterering the chords a bit instead of entirely power chords.
