Hey all, just wanted to show you my the fruits of my latest project - applying ragtime piano principles to the 7-string bass. Here's a video of my attempt at the Maple Leaf Rag, by Scott Joplin, that I recorded a month or two ago. Since then, I take it significantly slower than I played it here, just so you all know.
Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fduv3nF-kFA#GU5U2spHI_4

| | | | That's more like it! yeah, i am smiling and i am proud of you Adam for improving. You have come a long way. Your time center is more solid and the figures are much more rhythmically accurate. Well done!
I am just getting around to making videos this year. I play this tune using my right hand for "Stride Bass" and the chord melody is played with my left hand. I think as you continue, you will want to play the piece as written an include the intervals that make up the chord-melody.
Also there is nothing quite like playing stride bass.
Anyway, I admire your tenacity, keep up the great work! |

As for playing the chord melody, I've tried several times to start incorporating more of the harmonies, but I've run into problems of not having enough polyphony and having to sacrifice notes in the left hand for the right hand's performance. But I haven't actually worked on that aspect for very long, so I think I'll start devoting some practice time to it.

Gruff, I can play that on one string, but it sounds just like the A 440 over and over again.

| | | Very nice playing.... These extended range basses and tapping are quite amazing to me... but more in the sense of 'watching a monkey juggle'.... interesting and impressive... I sure can't do it... you rarely see it....but I can't quite figure out what it is or what its use is
Seriously, quite amazing! |

| I know exactly what you mean, actually. I've come up across plenty of people who are impressed with my playing, but there isn't any sort of connection to the music. I feel as if a lot of it can just be considered technical exercise. I get into the music a lot more when I'm doing normal fingerstyle on a solo, and while not as impressive, the general layman tends to appreciate it a lot more.
