Marcus is definatelly one of my fav. musicians,I listen to all of his albums all the time. Now I want to get into some R&B,and I want something like "Suddenly".There was one thread on Suddenly and almost no one said they liked it.Perhaps its really not that good but I'm an R&B newbie.

Also I got myself George Benson's "Give Me the Night" lately,I loved it too.

Recommend me some R&B like these.

First, I will say I'm no fan of Marcus' early R&B albums...

...if you're into George Benson's Give Me The Night you may like these albums from Al Jarreau-
This Time
Breakin' Away
Jarreau

I would stick these in the same smooth/adult contemporary '80s slick Pop/R&B side of the house as that Benson album you mentioned. A lot of the same backing musicians/writers appeared on both.

Jeffrey Osborne's 1st solo album (contains "I Really Don't Need No Light") is also in the same vibe.
More killer studio cats from that era.

Quincy Jones' R&B output from that time frame is also great-
Body Heat
I Heard That!
Mellow Madness
Sounds...And Stuff Like That
The Dude

...and James Ingram's 1st debut album, It's Your Night.
Again, a lot of the same musicians seem to pop up on all of these recordings (Anthony Jackson, Steve Lukather, John Robinson, Eric Gale, Steve Gadd, Hawk Wolinski, Nathan East, Robbie Buchanan, Seawind Horn Section, etc).

How about anything from Rufus...including Stompin' At The Savoy.

Marcus produced and played on Benson's latest 'Songs & Stories'. You might also want to check out the Jamaica Boys from the 80's, a smoking R&B group Marcus had with Lenny White. Also Luther Vandross is at the top of my R&B list, especially his first few albums with Marcus. Will Downing and Anita Baker are a few more R&B artist that used live rhythm sections with monster bassist on their albums.

Anita Baker had some nice stuff...IIRC, that debut album had Nathan East.
Another R&B-ish tune from that era is "Mystery" by The Manhatten Transfer (w/ Nathan East).

Anita Baker's debut album also featured Jimmy Haslip on a track (Been So Long), although she was notorious for getting Ricky Lawson, Nathan East, and Greg Phillinganes together and saying, "Make me a hit, boys." That album is definitely in the pantheon.

To me, nothing says "early Marcus" better than Grover Washington Jr.'s 'Winelight' album. Echo on the Luther Vandross stuff, and of course...Jamaica Boys. "You've Got a Friend" never sounded so funky. Speaking more to Nathan East, along with the names referenced in posts above, I'd include Babyface, Quincy Jones, and of course Fourplay (earlier the better, IMO). There are hundreds, if not thousands, of awesome R&B recordings in this vein. Good luck an enjoy!
