This a new release, 2 cd set trio with john ambercrombie and danny gottlieb. mwwaaah, indeed!
I first heard mark on Joe beck's "fingerpainting" (excellant cd btw) and really loved his fretless playing-very melodic.
This new cd is superb--so if you appreciate trio jazz, fretless electric bass, great sounding recordings, superb compositions and mwwaaah! you'll dig this one! |

I LOVED his playing with Metheny, and his playing on Larry Coryells trio (Tricycles) with Paul Wertico was exceptional REAL jazz. I caught that trio live a couple of years ago, very cool. I'll have to check out the new trio.

How did you arrive at this conclusion ?
FWIW I haven't received this release yet, but from the clips I've heard, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. |

Clean tone, to effects on bass or Abercrombie's guitar. Some of his compositions swing pretty hard, some are atmospheric and disc 2 has some slight avant garde stylings.
My comment re: no egan fans here was just a reaction to few views and no responses at the time I wrote that-no offense! |

Are you sure "As we Speak" is the title? Amazon had a new 2 CD live set with John Abercrombie, but it contained no info on who the other players were. As far as smooth Jazz, Freedom town certainly wasn't Be-bop and the elements stuff is all New-aggey atmospheric crap. Sorry I can't stomach the stuff for more then about half a tune. But I love Mark Egans straight ahead playing and I still think his tone on the early Pat Metheny stuff is some of the best Bass tone ever to grace vinyl.

Lots of great fretless bass work throughout both discs. This may well be Mark's best effort to date. If you liked "Mosiac" and "Freedom Town", you'll enjoy these discs. Not a weak composition in the bunch.
"As We Speak" should be a must have for any fan of fretless elecric bass. |

| | C'mon man! | | Join Date: Dec 1999 Location: Hawaii | | I've had 'As We Speak' playing in heavy rotation for the last couple months. I really dig it! I've always loved Mark Egan's fretless voice, it's very much his own! I'm also a long time fan of John Abercrombie, and love his playing on this CD.At first I was a little put off by the "double CD/double price" thing, but figured what the heck, support the cause.
...still playing the Pedulla too....wonderful sounding!!!!

I have had the privilege of having Mark Egan in the same region as me, and I have not known.
It finally hit me over the head, repeatedly seeing an ad of his in a local music website I visit often. "Mark Egan...mm Mark Egan...OhHHH! THAT Mark Egan? Yow..."
I'm an idiot, but I'll make up for it in 07, with a pledge to catch him frequently when he plays the local gigs.
Just checked out the clips to the CD, and it's Gorgeous. Whipping credit card out as I type ...
