Nice, isn't it? Note my avatar - I'm a bit biased.

He's the man. There are slap guys who do a little more technically, but something about his groove reeled me in when I was 16 and he's still got me.

I have that, and it is well and truely amazing! Ace dvd, I'd reccomend it to any Mark King fan, although his bass tone isn't the best, it contains some fierce playing!

It's a very interesting 5.1 mix on that DVD. The bass is almost all alone in the center channel. It makes it pretty easy to hear. I'm not a fan of that J he uses on that concert though.

Those GB basses are strange things...the blue one looks especially nice but I find they sound a bit too "round" for what we're used to hearing from Mark. Not quite bright and percussive enough, but I wouldn't kick one out of bed!

I think you've hit it. It's not what we expect out of Mark King. He didn't stick with it long, so he must have agreed.

Yep, and no double thumbing goin on there either

I love Mark King..and Mr. Pink broke my effing heart when I was learning it (I had the shock of my life doing a soundcheck a few weeks ago when I started playing the Mr Pink intro riff when the drummer and guiterist launched into it as well..best soundcheck I ever did..)...oh yeah and Gary Husband is an animal of a drummer as well.

(I only wish Mark wouldnt resort to that machine gun triplet thingy during his solos though it sounds "lazy")

Of course the really scary thing with Mark King is that he can slap at that speed and SING at the same time

I actually prefer Garry Husband on the drums to Phil Gould, but I think they made better records with Phil (although Guaranteed is amazing).

I disagree. I think Mark King is all about the technical and flash aspect of playing (hence the constant runs and fast play). There really isn't much of a groove being done by him in this song.

His tone is too much of a lead-bass tone to be holding anything down. He's doing it for himself, not the song, IMHO.

Well your certainly entitled to your opinion but with all due respect I totally disagree

For the record this tune was originally recorded by level 42 in the very early 80s when Mark was just a whippersnapper starting out (which in itself is impressive enough).

The bassline IS the lead on "Mr. Pink" hence the "in your face playing"...the drums are playing a quite sparse simple pattern and the bass is providing most of the driving rhythmic patterns as well as the melodic motifs which are echoed by the sax/keyboard combination.

I think its because his tone in this recording is a bit "toppy" it probably dosent sound like he's holding down the low end but trust me he is BIG TIME.

Check out the version on the live album "A physical presence" to hear exactly how groovy his playing is on this track.

(and his fingerstyle aint bad either )

So, I'm assuming he is playing a Status bass...would this be correct?

Also, what is on his right thumb? I had seen something a few years ago called a slap ring but this looks different.

Can anyone shed some light on these questions?

Thanks!

That's good ole Gaffa/duck (not sure of the spelling of the American version) Tape (the musician & roadies friend )

He wears that on his thumb to protect it....Mark dosent double thumb and is an extremely aggressive slapper so the tape is there to basically stop his thumb from splitting at the knuckle...ouch!

I remember the "slap ring", seemed like a good idea but never quite took off for some reason

Yes, it's the Status Kingbass, his signature model. Graphite neck-through, 32" scale, 16mm string spacing, and a device north of the nut that helps him bend his harmonics.

Here's the product information. Navigate Basses-->Kingbass.

Mark King is my favourite bassist.
Of all the other greats,I get more inspiration from his attack, aggression, syncopation and timing than any other on the current and past world stage. His grounding in drumming gave him a platform and an advantage over any bassist that preceeded him in that particular style of slap playing...also he did it at the right time when slap was becoming apparent in the early 80's.Right place at the right time? Probably, but know one now has his feel and no wonder, who could have due to the double hand slap coming from him in the first instance? Maybe I'm wrong but until King appeared on the scene, the technique and thrust of slapping came from the thumb of the right hand.He showed the bass world a new style inwhich the left hand 'palming' acted as as damping, thumping and sounding at will, and when he did this, as was said earlier he also sang lead melodies.Truly amazing bassist who didn't quite get taken into the hearts of the American public but did and still does go down a storm in the UK and Europe.
Rant over.
