I cant believe that nobody here talks about this man!! Shame on all TBers that are too busy listen to Wooten

Now, seriously, i love his voice, he is the only person im glad that is a smoker. His lyrics float from good to awesome, he doesnt play any instrument that i've seen, but he always have the best people around to create great arrangements. So now I make a list of songs that you guys should download, and for that you all must be grateful.

Solo stuff:

Carnival (awesome bass!!)
No Easy Action
Undertow (wandering in a desert at night with the wind blowing vibe)
One Way Street (masterpiece)
Hotel (depressing in a genial way)
Kimiko's Dream House (such a delicate beautiful song, almost a lullaby)
Hit the City (nocturne decay city vibe)

Ok, now some rocking stuff from his early days on Screaming Trees:

Nearly Lost You
Sworn and Broken
All I Know
No One Knows
Halo of Ashes

That should be enough to get you guys hooked on the man. Now i know must people will look at this thread and wont download anything, so here a great version of Hit the City

Lanegan is one of my favorite singers. "Whiskey for the Holy Ghost" is easily in my top 5 albums. I finally got to see him sing in person on the tour with Greg Dulli (The Gutter Twins). It was so cool to hear that voice coming out of the PA in person. I need to pick up more of his solo stuff; the other full album that I have is "Scraps for Midnight," plus a few odd solo songs and three or four Trees albums.

I'd recommend putting "Whiskey" in the player on a breezy autumn night and just sit still while listening intently.

Just a guess, but maybe Lanegan doesn't get mentioned too much here, because he's a singer/songwriter and not a bass player? Sorry I just had to

I've been listening to the Trees since the early 90's, but didn't discover his solo work until Bubblegum came out a few years back. Man that album totally blew me away. His earlier stuff, being more mellow, didn't quite get a hold of me in the same way, but it didn't take long for it to grow on me at all. Only then did I realy start to appreciate his voice for what it really is. It also helped that I'd discovered Johnny Cash a year or so before, who has a similar kind of voice IMO. Now I probably listen to the Trees and his solo work combined more than any other artist.

I've yet to hear any Gutter Twins, but I'm kind of holding my breath on that one. I wasn't very impressed by the Twilight Singers, although the Afghan Whigs had a couple of decent albums. Part of me is putting of getting the GT album, for fear it'll be the first of Lanegan's work I hate. Stupid I know, but that's me.

BTW he's mentioned in interviews that he does play (and I presume) write with a 6-string, he also played drums for the Screaming Trees (way back before any recording) before switching to vocals. Dunno if he ever picks up a bass though.

I love me some Mark Lanegan, he's got a great voice.
I love the singing on the Trees records and his early solo work, a great bellowing moan. Recently he seems to be going for a more Tom Waits / Cap'n Beefheart tone.
Also he has 2 albums out with Isobel Campbell the 2nd one is GREAT, the 1st one is ok... Check out "Sunday at Devil Dirt"!
I was skeptical about this as she used to be in a band called "Belle and Sebastian" who I think are LOATHSOME but it's a really fgood record!

LOL, I was exactly the same, but found their EP and first album to be pretty much on par with the rest of his work. Haven't had a chance to listen to the new one yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

As for the Gutter Twins, turns out after listening to them, they remind me too much of the Twilight Singers (as you might expect). They have their moments, but Dulli just doesn't do it for me.
