I think the subject says it all. Let me know what you all think. I consider this album to be a primer on being a bassist. |

It's been mentioned many times that Jamerson himself was impressed with the quality of tunes and performances on this record. This is unusual since he rarely spoke of his Motown work.
The title track "What's Going On" is exceptional - I love his use of space where he just lets the gears turn and doesn't play anything. It's also been said that James cut this track lying down on his back because he was either too tired or had too much to drink.

He was too drunk. He had already left when Marvin decided to cut the song. He refused to use any other bassist, so they went to the bar and got James. The only way he could play it and read the chart was to lay on his back.

The other part of Marvin's genius was his realizing the genius in Jamerson and letting him have free reign on those songs. A stunning piece of art if there ever was one!

The DVD Standing In the Shadow of Motown should be required viewing for all musicians. They put out two versions of the soundtrack the second extended out had a number of old Motown hits with the vocals ducked out and you can listen to the art of the rhythm section. |

I've always liked listening to "Mercy Mercy Me" as well. I finally bought the album (other songs were on Marvin compilations) and listened all the way through. It's sort of like hearing one big 40-minute song, but I'm not complaining when the song is this good | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
