Mastodon - The Hunter

So it leaked yesterday, anyone else had a chance to listen to it?

I was very skeptical after hearing the singles - which all seemed to sound the same to me. But this album rules, it may even be better than crack the skye. It sounds more like Mastodon than CtS did.

CtS according to the band themselves is where they've wanted to "head" or "go" their entire career, so...

I'll be getting it next week so no need to check the leak yet. They're one of the bands I actually don't mind buying their stuff and supporting.

As in the Opeth thread, I'll state something similar....another killer record from a brilliant band.

Drums, guitar, bass, vocals. Mastodon again floor the oppostion showing thats all you need. Metal all the way.

However, I expect the next Meshuggah and Gojira albums to destroy Opeth and Mastodon

i think it is absolutely wonderful. it FEELS like a logical step forward, combining much of what they have done in the past. the instrumentation is amazing, as always. some of the most thoughtful and complicated stuff they have written. definitely a different vibe though, and i can see plenty of people really not digging it.

What a coincidence... I just happen to be half way through The Hunter as I type this... Diggin' it for certain... I'm not sure if I like it more than Crack the Skye, but I'm certainly enjoying it. As a band, I certainly think they're hitting their stride...

***? I just got 10 seconds into the first track. This is horrible! Give me Leviathan and Remission please. This honestly sounds like Nickelback tuned down.

I like what I'm hearing. Melodic, and still kick-butt metal. Good stuff, I might buy this and Crack the Skye soon...

How do you know what Nickelback sound like?

Personally, I prefer the sound they are developing over the rawness of their earlier material, but I understand where you're coming from... Crack the Skye, IMO set the bar pretty high.

So do they...

Which is why they're progressing and writing better material than brainless, headbashing noise. If they wanted to write another "Leviathan", they would. But they don't, so they don't. It's pretty simple. They'd tell you the same, and they do.

I hope they do an instrumental album for this as well, just like CtS. I haven't even listened yet, but I have no doubt it's gonna crush so to hear just the music will rule.

It's fine to disagree but the insults cross the line. Be civil.

Seriously? I've seen them several times, starting right after Remission came out, before anyone thought they were "cool". I stopped seeing them after the release of Blood Mountain.

Unfortunately I have listened to Nickleback, but only on the radio. I don't have their albums and study their song structure like you apparently do!

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and that was mine. This is yours. We disagree. So what. You don't have to call me out like that, it's silly. Assuming that I'm a basement virgin is pretty far off, I actually get a decent amount of play, recently from the 21 y/o punk rock chick in my class, and I happen to be 34.

I wish this where so, but Hinds alcoholism is bound to catch up with him very soon. Having been involved with close friends who've dealt this this, there's verly little chance his ability to cope and continue will last much longer. Even if nothing tragic happens to him, his creativity and ability to play should soon suffer. I hope he will come to his senses sooner or later and get some help.

I heard the first 3 singles and lowered my expectations substantially. I still don't like the 2nd track, the Octopus song or the lyrics from where I paid attention. Musically however, i'm loving it.
