Mastodon are a 'people's metal band'. They're a band you can appreciate and love regardless of whether or not you like metal. In terms of appeal, I think they're up their with early Metallica, Zeppelin and Sabbath, though those aren't accurate comparisons to their sound, it's clear everyone should check them out.
They also do a smashing cover of "Emerald" by Thin Lizzy, pummels the original into oblivion, I'm sorry to say.
