Question maxwell: urban hang suite - I NEED MORE CD'S LIKE THIS

Sign in to disble this ad
can you guy's real off some other disc's with this kind of bass playing on them please? I love the understated pocket grooves on this album. Looking for more 100bpm - 110bpm R&B type bass grooves and tight fingerstyle playing...

I was listening to the Maxwell album around the same time that I was into Me'Shell NdegéOcello "Peace Beyond Passion", Erykah Badu "Baduizm", Incognito and Liquid Soul.

When it comes to getting into bass playing I mainly listen to pop and classic rock.

I also sometimes veer into some R&B territory. I never really get into any "bass player out front" music like Jaco etc. Just does not interest me.. For me it got to start with great SONGS. That said, I’m all for hearing Jaco do his thing in a song format, where he sits in with the drummer supporting the song. I’m not into bass as a lead instrument.

What I love to hear is bass playing/players that works for the greater good of the song, has soul and pocket, does not try to take the limelight from the vocals. I'm interested in any vocal based groove music that the bass player works as an integral part of the track and does not mess with the vibe of the song..

This is obviously very open to conjecture but I find the bass playing on Urban Hang Suite pretty much comes under this approach.

SADE - the old stuff with the full band. Diamond Life, Promise, and my personal favorite Stronger Than Pride. Paul Denman is just grooving all over the place. Funky, right in the pocket. Bass is way up in the mix.

Awesome!!!

Wow! I had never really listened to BNH before. So today, I went down to Rasputin Records and picked up a used copy of BNH-Shelter (1997)I understand that this is not the original singer on this CD but OMG! This thing is just funky, grooving music. It has a very late 70's funk vibe. Real band, real musicians, real instruments! Awesome! Andrew Levy is the man! I've got to get back in the woodshed!! I would hope to be this funky and grooving someday. It's a really excellent CD and i recommend it. I'm on track 6 right now and haven't heard a bad song yet! Bass is up in the mix where it should be too.

Absolutely amazing playing on that album. Hubert Eaves' tone is outstanding, too. Highly recommended!

I really loved that CD when it came out. After so many years of synth bass, it was a great breath of fresh air to hear bass guitar again with the Neo-Soul musicians.

reviving this thread after finding maxwell. good stuff. i would also recommend to the OP Van Hunt, Jill Scott, Joss Stone, and Prince's newer albums (musicology and 3121).

i saw Van Hunt live and he put on a great show. great band (he's a great guitarist as well, nice soloing) and they did a P-funk song for the encore.

yep, the Heavies are hip...check out Brother/Sister and their first one.
Andrew Levy is the last bassist (besides my former teacher Adam Nitti) to have a profound influence on my playing. He grooves!!
