Ok, you all know I'm a bassist! A pretty damn good one I must say. I'm not normally known for singing but my wife and I occasionally do the karaoke thing. Here's me and my backup singer/ dancer wife singing a classic tune.
The tune has a killer bassline and is one of the reasons I like it but basically, it's a good pop song!
Have at it and don't flame me to hard! + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dj01OxYzrEM |

You're running out of air by the time you sing one line.
Listen for when you pitch shift and either go sharp or flat.
Usually, for most people the tendency is to push past the note in anticipation.
Then sing flat at the end of a phrase, one because of the lack of breath and two, because you're coming to the end of a phrase.
Be honest when critiquing yourself.
You know how to sing, just believe you're going to get better at it.
I saw the band Hour Glass, do this tune, in Toronto in 1972(?) opening for The Jeff Beck Group. |

| | | So who'd ya tick off bad enough that they'd post this on YT? They must really have it out for ya!
You do need to go to the Frank Sinatra Microphone School for Vocalists, though. Tough to groove without a bass hanging around you neck, isn't it? (Or to hide behind...)
The tune is a great OHW. |

The tune is a great OHW. | I actually posted it myself. And again, I'm not really a singer. It's Karaoke guys! It's supposed to be fun. I'm feeling like I'm on American Idol and Simon's about to let me have it! |

Everyone should breath deep breathes from below. In the nose and out the mouth.
Most people pant like dogs and run out of air.
Watch how you breath when your playing the bass.
It's just observation.
It's bound to help your harmonies.
But, fell free to ignore.

This is a cover of REM's Losing My Religion that a guy in England did and I sang the vocals. http://www.yourguitarplace.com/sites...69270b081d.mp3

| | | | Ignore the haters, dude. For a non-singer, that wasn't bad at all. It's karaoke for gods sake, it's not like you were practicing for months or took it seriously. I've seen FAR worse. |

Maybe you didn't understand my point- I am saying in all likelihood, he did not stand in front of his bedroom mirror practicing Brandy so he could belt in out at the neighborhood block party. He had a couple of beers, and probably figured what the hell, and gave it shot. In which case it's not bad.
The only thing worse than karaoke itself, is the people who take it too seriously- who at the bar go up and sing song after song, thinking they are really entertaining the crowd, when about 5 percent of the people are even paying attention. DW did it the it was supposed to be done- spur of the moment, unrehearsed, unscripted, and with no delusions that he would one day be singing at MSG.
