Most smaller, low-powered combo amps are not capable of sounding like "metal god" amps. Little combos are great for practicing and learning, but there is only so much they can do. EQ won't help.

That said, you can get closer if you buy something like the Tech21 VT Bass pedal, or any other Sansamp type pedal, as they are designed to emulate the sound of a "bigger better" amp.

I'd echo the sentiments above. Be sure to use some fresh strings when you can, and you'll need to play with a pick for that high-fi attacking sound.

I got sold on my Sansamp running it into some random little combo at GC. I thought- if it works this well with a practice amp, it'll sound awesome on my real rig.

Any string brand in particular? I have heard some talk about different tones with different types of strings? and I might look into the pedal idea because I was thinking of getting some sort of effects pedal soon anyway what exactly does it do to the sound?

Go to the Strings forum to read all about different brands and models of strings, with all kinds of tone discussion. Go to the Effects forum to read about amp modelers and overdrives, etc. etc. and over there you can even find audio and Youtube clips demoing the different pedals.

I interviewed him a few months ago Get To Know: David Ellefson of Megadeth | Guitar Video Channel Blogs

He uses Hartke amps and Jackson basses and spoke about cutting through the "midrange wall of guitars"

I'm going to say start by boosting some lows and highs and cutting the mids. If you don't play with a pick try to get a little fingernail in there to help get the picked attack sound.
