I've been getting into Meshell a little more recently and this album is great. Rocks out a good amount and the grooves and basslines are phat.
Thoughts? Anyone else pick this up? |

I think my favorite song is "Solomon" just because the groove is so deep.

She's one of my favourite bass players. Only just managed to find of a copy of Plantation Lullabies: it was pretty hard to get hold of but so worth the trouble. Great tunes, great playing. Highly recommended if you haven't heard that one. Peace Beyond Passion is amazing too.

| | | | I always liked her playing (Les Paul Bassist, for all the LP haters), dissliked her attitude and never purchased her solo music, until now.
I'll try it.
Thanks for the NPR link! |

I bought the latest CD and just didn't dig it. Maybe I'm getting old, but the tunes just layed there to me... versus the very interesting song writing on the first CD (I think that one is not available anymore... it's amazing.. can't remember the name.. had a cut called something like 'Jesus killed the blind man' or something like that... just massive groove).
Totally dug her playing on that Mellencamp remake of 'Wild Nights' also... smokin'!

I like her latest CD though. It is the best non-funk offering she has ever produced, IMO. She gets a great rock tone!

I sometimes feel like she have gotten a bit egotistical, or perhaps she's just afraid of putting something out there that just "is". She's crazy talented, but everything she's done for a while now just seems to be over the top in terms of esoteric vibe or witty lyricism.

I really dig the jazz stuff she did with people like Pat Metheny and those guys. There are some awesome videos of her with her own band and playing in Metheny's group where she just lays back and grooves. |

But I just wind up feeling let down quite often by her stuff. Like another said, it never really takes me anywhere, no swell to it. I understand the merit in that kind of vibe, but it leaves empty personally.

First song I listened to was Virgo. Rad.
Killer grooves, she has. Killer music. |

A very creative effort.
Glad I bought it. |

That is my favorite Me'Shell CD as well - in addition to her own creative work, there's a Prince tune and a cover of Bill Withers' "Who Is He, And What Is He To You?" on it. Truly outstanding record - one of my top 5 lifetime CDs. |

One of my favorite, albeit heavy, opening lines of an album.
She will never be accused of being wishy-washy. |

Totally dug her playing on that Mellencamp remake of 'Wild Nights' also... smokin'! | That track is called "The Way". It's on Peace Beyond Passion, and it does indeed groove... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2cY3RjA_X4
She ain't the bassist on this vid, but he is playing the same lines, with almost the exact same sound as she gets on the album.
Here's a live cut of God Fear Money. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY033jfPoNk
EDIT: Didn't know TB doesn't allow Youtube direct links or whatever they're called.
